The main units of the AIC are : the focal plane assembly(FPA), equipped with a back-thinned illuminated CCD matrix and a front-end amplifier, provides the optical signal detection. A thermoelectric peltier cooler under the detector sets the operating point at-25°C ± 100 mK, the detection box(BD) which supplies the FPA with the necessary electrical signals to operate the CCD. It generates the clock waveforms from the VEU signals and filters the supplied voltage from the DSU, the video electronics unit(VEU) which processes the analog signal coming from the FPA, digitizes it on 12 bits before passing it on in serial processing to the science data processing subsystem(SDPSS). It also provides the DBs with the primary clock signal. The power conditioning of the VEU is located in the same unit, the detection supply unit(DSU) delivers relevant stabilized voltages to the 5 DUs and power to thermo-coolers from the main supply feeder of the instrument.

The description of the Station's flight attitude(orientation relative to the plane of its orbit) is referenced to local-vertical/local-horizontal(LVLH) axes that are fixed with respect to the Station's near-circular orbit(i. e., not to the physical Station). The LVLH origin is at the Station's center-of-mass; the z-axis points radially toward the Earth's center(or toward the nadir direction), the x-axis points along the orbital velocity vector(the ram direction, with wake being opposite), and the y-axis completes the right-handed triad. The flight attitude of the Station is then described using a second, Station-fixed, coordinate system whose orientation relative to LVLH is specified using the Eulerian angles of yaw, pitch and roll. Several Station-fixed coordination systems are defined. The most widely used is the Space Station Reference Coordinate System,... in thich the positive x-axis points along the axis of the U. S. lab away from the Zarya and Service Modules; the positive y-axis points starboard along the main truss, and positive z completes a right-handed coordinate system.

CONT

Even when the designer has settled the size and angle of the tail plane, the force which it will experience will be outside the control of the pilot, and although they may automatically compensate for such things as changes in pitching moment on the main planes, they cannot possibly deal with changes of weight such as are caused by the dropping of bombs, consumption of fuel, and changes in the disposition of passengers and cargo. For this reason the adjustable tail plane was introduced, this being operated by an actuating gear and controlled by a wheel or lever in the pilot's cockpit. This enabled the pilot to alter the angle of setting of the tail plane during flight and so cause downward or upward forces upon it at will, thus balancing the aeroplane under all conditions.
