Nuclear Power Demonstration reactor. This was the prototype CANDU reactor, and the first power reactor in Canada. It was located upstream of AECL' s Chalk River laboratories, along the Ottawa River's south shore(i. e. in Ontario). The reactor had a maximum continuous output of 22 MWe gross(19. 5 MWe net)... The reactor was built as a joint AECL/Ontario Hydro/Canadian General Electric project, and was initially intended to use a vertically-fuelled pressure vessel reactor. The design was changed in 1957 to natural uranium fuel bundles in horizontal pressure tubes in unpressurized heavy water moderator, with on-line refuelling. These are hallmarks of the CANDU reactor. The reactor had 132 fuel channels(each fuel channel comprised a pressure tube inside a calandria tube) and the coolant leaving the channels was 7. 2 MPa and 277°C. The main reactivity control was by adjusting the heavy-water moderator level, which could be rapidly dumped for fast shut down. NPD was finally shut down on May 5 1987, for economic reasons... 4, record 15, English, - nuclear%20power%20demonstration%20reactor

The Dominion Observatory was founded for very pragmatic reasons. The objective was to have a longitude reference (with associated time signal) for surveying in Canada: "To open up the West". Surveyors in the field would compare the time signal of the Dominion Observatory with their local time determined by astronomical observations - the difference corresponding to longitude difference between Canada’s prime meridian (Dominion Observatory) and their location. Construction of the building began in July 1902 was completed in 1905. 2, record 25, English, - Dominion%20Observatory

The Dominion Observatory was an astronomical observatory in Ottawa, Canada that operated from 1905 to 1970. The Observatory was also an institution within the Canadian Federal Government. The observatory grew out of the Department of the Interior's need for the precise coordinates and timekeeping that at that time could only come from an observatory. For several years they had used a small observatory on the Ottawa River for this purpose. In 1902 it was decided that Canada needed a larger national observatory similar to the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Britain. The new building was thus erected near Dow's Lake on the Agriculture Department's Central Experimental Farm land. This building was completed in 1905. Its main instrument was a 15 inch refracting telescope, the largest refracting telescope ever installed in Canada. While the building and institution were primarily dedicated to astronomical timekeeping in support of surveying, a number of other activities took place here. The Dominion Observatory was Canada's leading institution in Geophysics for many decades, which included the operation of Canada's national seismometer network. The facility did important work but with this bridgehead into the world of astronomy and the growth of the field of astrophysics Canadian astronomers quickly demanded a facility designed for the new scientific age. 3, record 25, English, - Dominion%20Observatory

Bangladesh agriculture is overwhelmingly rain-fed and highly vulnerable to floods, droughts, cyclones, tidal waves as well as river bank erosion. For example, consecutive devastating floods of 1987 and 1988 destroyed the country's major crops(rice and jute) ;the drought of 1989 had a heavy toll on the country's agricultural production; the lack of rain in 1994 reduced the main rice crop(Aman rice) production by about 15 per cent. 4, record 26, English, - Aman%20rice

The Red River style of log building construction was one of the original methods used in Canada. The logs were left rounded with notched ends. This type of construction consisted of a basic frame of grooved, vertical, squared posts, mortised and tenoned into sills at their bases or set directly into the ground (in rare, early cases), and at their tips, mortised and tenoned into squared plates. Horizontal, squared timbers were fixed between these posts, with the tenons of the horizontal timbers fitting into the vertical groove of the posts. Roof structures of varying types were built on the wall plates. Red River Frame construction allowed both flexibility and portability. Large buildings could be erected using short logs, and buildings could be easily dismantled, moved and put up elsewhere. For these reasons, Red River Frame was the predominant type of construction used in the Canadian West during the fur trade era. The Red River style of log construction has spread across North America and is currently enjoying new popularity.
