The sarod is a short-necked, fretless plucked lute from North India... The sarod has a wooden body, usually made of teak, with a parchment sound table, and a small secondary resonator at the top of the neck. An unusual feature of the sarod is that the neck is covered with a sheet of smooth, polished metal. As there are no frets on the sarod, the subtle pitch inflections central to Indian music are achieved by sliding the finger on the string as it is pressed down on the metal surface. Typically, the sarod has four or five main playing strings, three to five drone and "chikari" strings and up to 16 sympathetic strings. The strings are plucked with a plectrum, which is usually made of coconut shell.

In a traditional icebreaker structure, the shell plating is supported by main frames spaced about 40 centimeters apart. The main frames are supported by longitudinal stringers, and the stringers are supported by web frames or bulkheads.

[In the literature of bryozoans,] the opening through which the living animal could extend from its zooecium.

CONT

To feed, the lophophore and upper end of the polypide are pushed out of the zooecium through an opening called the aperture, which is on the zooecium’s upper surface near its head end.

CONT

The aperture is an opening in certain kinds of mollusc shells : it is the main opening of the shell, where part of the body of the animal emerges for locomotion, feeding, etc.

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
DEF

An electron in a molecule which serves to hold two adjacent nuclei together.

CONT

In chemistry, valence electrons are the electrons contained in the outermost, or valence, electron shell of an atom. Valence electrons are important in determining how an element reacts chemically with other elements: The fewer valence electrons an atom holds, the less stable it becomes and the more likely it is to react. The reverse is also true, the more full/complete the valence shell is with valence electrons, the more inert an atom is and the less likely it is to chemically react with other chemical elements or with chemical elements of its own type.

CONT

bonding electrons : The electrons in the outermost shell(main energy level) of an atom, also called valence electrons. These are the electrons involved in forming bonds.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
DEF
