Green and blue corridors are areas ... which connect habitat and wildlife populations and can provide opportunities for walking and cycling, and also facilitate the movement of wildlife.

CONT

Improving the environment and creating a green and blue corridor is one of the main objectives in restoring the [Wilts and Berks Canal]. Creating wetland habitat for endangered species such as the water vole is very important but just as crucial is making a corridor where species can move from one habitat to another along the margins and hedgerows.

Not just simple responses to an external stimulus play a role in instinctive behavior; instinctive activity involves sequences of behavior that run a predictable course. These behaviors may last seconds, minutes, hours or even days. Exemplifying this, we can refer to a particular species of digger wasp, which finds and captures only honeybees. With no previous experience, a female wasp will unearth an intricate burrow, find a bee, paralyze it with a careful and precise sting to the neck, pilot back to her discreet home, and, when the larder has been supplied with the correct number of bees, lay an egg on one of them and seal the chamber.... Overall, one of the main distinctive features of instinctive activity is the ability to react to an external stimulus the correct way the first chance(and every time thereafter) the animal receives. This feature distinguishes this particular behavior from what ethnologists call learned behavior, which scientists have discovered are actions that take place from conditioning an animal to learn the right way.

Walnut wilt is a noninfectious disease which causes the sudden wilt and death of many plant species. The problem occurs in the beds of sensitive plants growing near walnut trees... The cause is an active compound known as juglone produced by these trees. Juglone has been isolated from the roots, leaves, bark, and husks. The compound can also be found in a narrow zone in the soil surrounding the living roots. Because of this limited distribution of the toxin, the position of juglone producing roots underground is reflected in the pattern of wilting plants above ground... Affected plants wilt suddenly and often show a browning of the vascular tissues just under the outer layers of the main stem... Some plants with mild tolerance may show stunting, lack of flower development, and/or lack of vigor.

The International Whaling Commission(IWC) was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which was signed in Washington DC on 2 December 1946. The purpose of the Convention is to provide for the proper conservation of whale stocks and thus make possible the orderly development of the whaling industry. The main duty of IWC is to keep under review and revise as necessary the measures laid down in the Schedule to the Convention which govern the conduct of whaling throughout the world. These measures, among other things, provide for the complete protection of certain species designate specified areas as whale sanctuaries; set limits on the numbers and size of whales which may be taken; prescribe open and closed seasons and areas for whaling; and prohibit the capture of suckling calves and female whales accompanied by calves. The compilation of catch reports and other statistical and biological records is also required.

Even if OECD countries are responsible for 77% of the world fossil fuel-related emissions of CO2-whose increasing concentration in the atmosphere is one of the main causes of global warming-they advocate for a solution that consists on using the photosynthetic activity of tree leaves to capture CO2 and retain carbon in the wood. Comment piéger le CO2? [...] Les forêts constituent une fabuleuse pompe biologique. Le CO2 serait donc piégé sous forme de carbone solide. [...] La mer et l'océan aussi peuvent capturer le CO2.

Temporal dynamics or the temporal continuity of ecosystems... In forest management, a tree can be considered to go through four main development stages : a) A period of youth from seedling to low pole, characterized by strong individual sensitivity to intra and interspecific competition... b) An adult stage of development from high pole to young forest. Each tree has asserted itself in its respective strata, i. e., ensuring a vital space for energy(light, mineral salts) and water. In primary forest, competition obviously still takes place, particularly when climatic conditions prove difficult, bringing about a difference in vigour between individuals of the same species(thus in relative diameter). c) A period of maturity... d) A period of senescence...

It should be emphasized that the integration of herbicides into the crop protection program or system needs careful consideration. Main factors to be considered are the rotation sequence, the most common weed or complexes of weeds in the field, and their density and duration. Effort should be made in choosing and matching the particular herbicide(s) with the specific weed species or complexes of weeds present, the geographic location, and edaphic and environmental conditions. Many combinations of herbicides result in either additive or synergistic effects on weeds. The activity of soil-acting herbicides depends on such factors as persistence, absorption properties of the soil, soil organic matter, soil types, soil moisture, and cultivation. Herbicide rates may need to be adjusted on the basis of soil texture and type. As well as effects of soil on the performance of herbicides, there are converse effects of the herbicides on soil properties....
