A system which regulates steam flow into the main throttle valve under automatic thermostatic control and maintains a fixed vacuum differential between supply and return by means of a differential controller and a vacuum pump.

Subatmospheric systems are similar to vacuum systems, but in contrast provide a means of partial vacuum control on both the supply and return piping so that the steam temperature can be regulated to vary the heat emission from the heat exchanger in direct proportion to the heat loss from the structure.
