Subject field(s)

  • Deck Department (Naval Forces)
DEF

A naval order given aboard a ship to issue the crew a celebratory drink.

OBS

Its origins lie in the age of sail. The mainbrace was the largest rigging on a sailing vessel and was used to control the angle of the yard that held the main sail.... Splicing a mainbrace was already one of the most difficult repairs on a ship, even without the added pressure of doing it speedily. During battle it was incredibly dangerous. Successfully splicing a mainbrace was rewarded with an extra ration of rum. This led to the order “Splice the Mainbrace” becoming authorization to imbibe a celebratory drink and has been expanded to include other significant events, including a successful battle, a royal birth, a royal wedding and special occasions.

Key term(s)
  • splice the main brace

French

Domaine(s)
  • Cérémonial et traditions (Militaire)
  • Service du pont (Forces navales)
DEF

Depending on volume of traffic handled at these points, the number of crews vary from one to a sizable pool.
