biome. A biological subdivision that reflects the ecological and physiognomic character of the vegetation. Biomes are the largest geographical biotic communities that it is convenient to recognise. They broadly correspond with climatic regions, although other environmental controls are sometimes important. They are the equivalent to the concept of major plant formations in plant ecology, but are defined in terms of all living organisms and of their interaction with the environment (and not only with the dominant vegetation type). Typically, distinctive biomes are recognised for all the major climatic regions of the world, emphasising the adaptation of living organisms to their environment. 1, record 9, English, - boreal%2Dmontane

An airborne wind turbine is a design concept for a wind turbine that is supported in the air without a tower. A tether would be used to transmit energy to the ground. These systems would have the advantage of tapping an almost constant wind and doing so without a set of slip rings or yaw mechanism, without the expense of tower construction. The main disadvantage is that kites and "helicopters" come down when there is insufficient wind. These schemes require a very long power cable and an aircraft exclusion zone. As of 2006, no commercial airborne wind turbines are in regular operation. 4, record 10, English, - airborne%20wind%20turbine

Powder avalanches consist of fine particles of snow suspended in air. They often accompany dry flowing avalanches but become pure powder avalanches when the [fine particles of snow] separate from the dense core that forms the main mass of flowing avalanches. Walnut wilt is a noninfectious disease which causes the sudden wilt and death of many plant species. The problem occurs in the beds of sensitive plants growing near walnut trees... The cause is an active compound known as juglone produced by these trees. Juglone has been isolated from the roots, leaves, bark, and husks. The compound can also be found in a narrow zone in the soil surrounding the living roots. Because of this limited distribution of the toxin, the position of juglone producing roots underground is reflected in the pattern of wilting plants above ground... Affected plants wilt suddenly and often show a browning of the vascular tissues just under the outer layers of the main stem... Some plants with mild tolerance may show stunting, lack of flower development, and/or lack of vigor. 2, record 17, English, - walnut%20wilt

Partial malfunctions occur when the parachute deploys, but does not work properly. This creates a situation that does not allow you to land safely. Canopies that partially malfunction do not look "good" and tend to move violently. The following conditions may cause a partial malfunction : line over(a line goes over the canopy instead of straight down to the harness), entangled or broken lines, and holes, burns and/or rips in the canopy. The exact procedure to follow varies by drop zone, but genrally you will cut away the main canopy and open the reserve parachute. 3, record 23, English, - partial%20malfunction

Pollutants in particulate and gaseous forms may be deposited on the soil surface directly by processes of dry deposition. In the temperate zone, however, the ground surface is generally covered by plant canopies and, except in agricultural areas where bare soil may be exposed for a part of the year, the main receiving surface for dry-deposited pollutants is likely to be vegetation. 1, record 43, English, - dry%2Ddeposited%20pollutant
