Chlorine dioxide manufacture. Chlorine dioxide is an explosive gas and cannot be prepared safely in undiluted form nor can it be liquified for transport and storage, therefore it must be manufactured on site. The processes that have been developed which generate chlorine dioxide in dilute aqueous solution by reducing sodium chlorate in a strong acid solution with a reducing agent usually sulphur dioxide, methanol, sodium/hydrogen chloride and lastly hydrogen peroxide.

Plusieurs procédés ont été mis au point pour produire le bioxyde de chlore en solution aqueuse diluée, par action d'une solution acide forte sur le chlorate de sodium à l'aide d'un agent réducteur (l'anhydride sulfureux, le méthanol, l'acide chlorhydrique ou le chlorure de sodium).
