MANUFACTURED GOOD [12 records]

Record 1 2017-02-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Urban Furnishings and Equipment
  • Equipment and Facilities (Recreation)
DEF

Common and usual facilities, installations and apparatus found in parks and playgrounds for children’s enjoyment: watery places, sandy surfaces, slides, merry-go-rounds, climbers, etc.

CONT

It seems that most of the playgrounds in the USA have limited interest for children let alone for parents. The complete dependency on manufactured play equipment that is only good for climbing, swinging, sliding, etc. had a negative impact on "play". The "hiding places", "watery places" and "sandy surfaces" that Mom no. 2 talks about have disappeared or disappearing. A recent New York Times article on sand in playgrounds concluded that sand has completely disappeared from almost all New York City playgrounds.

CONT

Working together, children can create their own play equipment.

Il s'agit de matériels préfabriqués ou fabriqués sur place éventuellement par assemblage d'éléments manufacturés.

Subject field(s)

DEF

A flexible tubing used in an aircraft plumbing system to allow relative movement between hose ends.

OBS

Because of the need for flexibility in many areas of aerospace vehicle construction, it is often necessary to employ hose instead of rigid tubing for the transmission of fluids and gases under pressure. Specifications for hose to be used in aerospace vehicle systems are given in the Air Force-Navy Aeronautical Design Standard(AND) 10340. This specification covers hoses for fuel, oil, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other systems. Hose and hose assemblies for aircraft plumbing systems are manufactured in four different pressure categories : low-pressure, with a maximum operating pressure of 300 psi [2068 kPa] ;medium-pressure(300 to 1500 psi) [2068 to 10 342 kPa] ;high pressure(1500 to 3000 psi) [10 342 to 20 685 kPa] ;and extra-high-pressure(3000 to 6000 psi) [20 865 to 41 370 kPa]. It must be noted that the pressure ranges given above are general and that variations will be encountered in specific systems and installations. Hose assemblies are usually pressure-tested at a pressure at least twice the maximum operating pressure. The burst pressure is usually required to be at least four times the maximum operating pressure. Thus a good margin of safety is provided.

CONT

Polysulfide-type synthetic rubber is a compound of aliphatic hydrocarbon chains linked by di-, tri-and tetra-sulfide links, manufactured from sodium polysulfide and a dihalide. Thiokol is the commercial trade name. In the manufacturing process, the sodium polysulfide is heated to 160°F.... This synthetic rubber shows oil and solvent resistance, good aging, low permeability, and has good processing characteristics.... Thiokol has been used in paint-spray hoses, oil and gasoline hoses and rollers, and as a binder.

  • Spacecraft
CONT

Thermal blanketing is used to keep satellite cooler or warmer, depending on what is needed. It acts like the insulation in your house : when it's hot outside, insulation keeps cool inside and when it's cold outside, insulation keeps warm air inside. Mylar [is] a very good material for thermal blanketing. Mylar is the trademark name for a polyester film plastic discovered and manufactured by the company DuPont. Mylar has many uses, including insulation, backing for magnet tape, balloons, and as a polyester film used to cover a metallic yarn. Mylar is also used for insulation in space suits. It is moderately expensive, and moderately durable.

A cord which passes an intense flame along its length at a uniform rate to light safety fuses in succession ...

OBS

Two types are manufactured, a fat cord having a nominal burning speed of 1 second per foot and a slow cord having a nominal burning speed of 10 seconds per foot. Both cords possess excellent water resistance and good storage properties and they will withstand a reasonable amount of rough handling.
