... direct metal laser melting(DMLM), the latest technology for 3D printing and additive manufacturing of metal parts.... Utilizing the DMLM process, metal parts of the most complex geometries are built layer-by-layer(down to 20 microns) directly from 3D CAD [computer-aided design] data. Parts built using DMLM have excellent mechanical properties equivalent to wrought materials, high detail resolution, and exceptional surface quality. The metal powder is melted entirely to create a fully dense, fine, homogenous structure. Unique geometric freedom of design enables DMLM to form cavities and undercuts, which with conventional machining methods, can only be produced with great difficulty, if at all.

The construction of novel types of fibre lasers often requires doped fibres which first have to be designed, manufactured and finally characterised. In this presentation we give a comprehensive survey of the development of novel doped multiple clad fibers. Starting with a design of the refractive index profile of such a fibre, we have optimised the manufacturing based on an MCVD(modified chemical vapor deposition) process. Tests of the manufactured fibre including the measurements of the absorption spectrum and the dopant concentration are reported.

Using a variety of modular computer systems with standard and custom software packages, services are available in support of many diverse design and manufacturing applications. A considerable amount of time can be saved by the use of computers in the design/manufacturing process. This time saving comes primarily from design prototype simulation and analysis, and also from the fact that the designer can create his design without ever having either to draw a line on paper of recreate an existing design element. Simultaneous engineering is understood to mean an integrated, parallel approach to designing the product and the process at the same time, e.g. in vehicle development. The basic idea of this concept is to move from formerly strictly sequential, discrete processes towards carrying them out in parallel or overlapping them.

Design process is defined as being the whole of the tasks necessary for an idea, originating from customer needs, to be achieved as a product or service satisfying the said customer's needs. Some of these tasks are sequential, but as the "time to market"(development cycle) has to be shorter every day, several tasks are led in parallel : risk studies are launched even before having finished the functional analysis, etc... This concept is named Simultaneous Engineering, or Competing Engineering or Integrated Development. It is supported by a serie of methodologic tools, based on quality(Quality Function Deployment-QFD, Value Analysis, Functional Analysis, FMEA, Design For Manufacturing,...) and organization(Project Group, Process Organization,...) as well as on technologic means(Computer Assisted Design, Computer Assisted Manufacturing, Fast Prototype Process,...).

Masks for printed or microcircuitry work can be prepared by simple techniques such as knife cutting, or by means of sophisticated systems. For both printed and integrated-circuit work, the original circuit layout is the starting point. Then, means for generating the pattern, reproduction, and mask making must be devised. Photomask making for integrated circuit production required far more precision, accuracy, and resolution than does the printed circuit manufacturing process. Whereas printed circuits require careful design and production attention in X and Y dimensions, IC production introduces the third dimension, Z. ICs consist of several layers which must register one with the other to a precision of better than 10 um(250 nm). To provide geometries of the order of one or two microns, very-high-resolution optics are necessary. Because integrated circuits are very susceptible to defects, the ultimate in cleanliness and temperature control is required.

When a semiconductor manufacturer plans new facilities, he must consider the problem of providing sufficient quantities of water that is pure enough for use in the many critical cleaning and rinsing operations of the manufacturing process. Although most production facilities have similar, stringent requirements for high-purity water, their water sources may have widely varying characteristics, depending largely upon geographical location. With a computer and a laser printer anyone can be a publisher. Now, with only slightly more sophisticated technology, they can be a manufacturer too. The process of 3-D printing, invented at MIT by Emanuel Sachs and Michael Cima, can pass from computer-aided design straight to manufacture(though more conventional machine tools can also do this if a part is merely to be cut from a block of metal). And it can cope with parts that have complicated geometries, with cavities and cooling channels-difficult trick to manage with traditional manufacturing techniques.
