Jusque dans les années 90, Élections Canada et Statistique Canada se servaient de cartes imprimées. Edge Matching [is an] important part of the creation of a digital map or GIS database. One digital map may encompass many paper maps, but when the paper maps are laid edge-to-edge, features running across boundaries of the map sheets are not always properly aligned. These misalignments occur for many reasons including survey error, cartographic generalization, and problems of map projection and compilation. Edge matching is a term applied to a variety of techniques employed to resolve these inconsistencies, including warping and rubber sheeting. 4, record 6, English, - edge%20matching

When the number of controls is increased from one to two, a second catastrophe "map" comes into play. Now we have a system that can be pushed in two different ways. Consequently, the topological "map" of what Thom calls the "cusp catastrophe" has two dimensions, which can be represented by a sheet of paper deformed so that a fold appears. The control variables or important influences on the system can be pictured as pushing the system around on the folded surface of the paper. 1, record 13, English, - cusp%20catastrophe
