Subject field(s)
  • Cartography
  • Remote Sensing
CONT

Division of the total range of anomaly values(known also as the dynamic range) into a number of intervals can be done in different ways, which can significantly affect the appearance of the resulting map. The simplest approach is to divide the range into equal intervals. This is called linear equalization, and it can result in an effective image, particularly when the populations of grid cells within intervals are similar.

DEF

An instrument combining a pulsed laser transmitter and optical receiver (usually a telescope) with an electronic signal processing unit used for the detection and ranging of various distant targets in the atmosphere, analogous to the principles of operation of microwave radar.

CONT

The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems.

CONT

There are three basic generic types of lidar :range finders, DIAL, and Doppler lidars. Rande finder lidars are the simplest lidars. They are used to measure the distance from the lidar instrument to a solid or hard target Differential Absorption Lidar(DIAL) is used to measure chemical concentrations(such as ozone, water vapor, pollutants) in the atmosphere. Doppler lidar is used to measure the velocity of a target High-resolution DEMs with vertical accuracy as good as 10 cm can be created with Lidar. Lidar is also better able to map bare earth elevations in forested or vegetated areas than other methods because only a single laser pulse needs to be able to reach between trees and the ground.

Topographic Mapping Service.-Topographic maps usually portray both natural and manmade features. They show and name works of nature including mountains, valleys, plains, lakes, rivers, and vegetation. They also identify the principal works of man, such as roads, boundaries, transmission lines, and major buildings. The wide range of information provided by topographic maps make them extremely useful to professional and recreational map users alike. Topographic maps are used for engineering, energy exploration, natural resource conservation, environmental management, public works design, commercial and residential planning, and outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and fishing.

Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite(SWAS) is a NASA mission to map the universe in the radio wavelength range from 487 to 557 GHz. Launched in late 1998, SWAS made the first space-based observations of submillimeter wavelengths to help scientists understand the processes that contribute to the birth of stars. The submillimeter region is important for observation because instruments can detect emissions from molecules in very cold clouds in space. SWAS is the first instrument flown to detect water in almost every dust cloud in space that it has observed, a key indicator in the cooling process that contributes to star formation.

CONT

The Ministry of the Environment has published general guidelines to assist proponents in identifying general areas that may be of concern. These guidelines only present an overview and identify a range of factors(including social ones) that might be relevant in the planning of a specific undertaking. The most common problem with this approach is that it does not provide the kind of "road map" that some proponents seem to want when dealing with the social and community components of environmental assessments.

CONT
