Atomic-force microscopy is similar to scanning-tunneling microscopy(STM) in that it can image surfaces at atomic-scale resolution. The difference between AFM and STM is that AFM does not require that the sample be an electrically conducting material. Like STM, it uses an atomically-sharp tip that is brought very close to the surface. The tip will feel a chemical attraction or repulsion and will move up or down on its supporting cantilever. This movement is monitored by an optical laser beam as the tip is moved laterally across the surface. As in STM, rastering the tip across the surface produces a topographic map of the surface. 3, record 1, English, - atomic%20force%20microscopy

In an effort to improve the resolution of the 8q24 map, we have undertaken radiation hybrid(RH) mapping. This method compliments the existing mapping strategies of meiotic mapping(Gyapay et al., 1994) and somatic cell hybrid panels(Wagner et al., 1991; Parrish et al., 1994), but at a higher resolution and with particular emphasis on defining the order and intermarker distance of loci in regions of interest. 1, record 4, English, - positional%20cloning

A genome map describes the order of genes or other markers and the spacing between them on each chromosome. Human genome maps are constructed on several different scales or levels of resolution. At the coarsest resolution are genetic linkage maps, which depict the relative chromosomal locations of DNA markers(genes and other identifiable DNA sequences) by their patterns of inheritance. Physical maps describe the chemical characteristics of the DNA molecule itself. 2, record 8, English, - genome%20map

1, record 12, French, - topographie%20du%20fond%20marin

A good indication of the positions of nearly all the non-hydrogen atoms in a protein can be obtained from a structure solved to a resolution of 3. 0 A or better. Such a study involves a series of stages. Firstly, tens of milligrams of the protein must be isolated in pure form, and then crystals of millimeter dimensions must be grown which diffract X-rays to high resolution. However, reconstruction of the electron density of the molecule from diffraction data requires information about the amplitude and the phase of the X-ray reflections. To solve the phase problem, diffraction data from at least one heavy-metal derivative of the protein must be measured. Thus an electron density map of the molecule can be calculated. 1, record 13, English, - electron%20density%20map

1, record 13, French, - carte%20de%20densit%C3%A9%20%C3%A9lectronique
