Based on the map, determining the path of least resistance related to the topography is an analysis tool long used by search planners. If the missing person's intended route of travel is known, it may or may not defy this rule, but it certainly makes the search easier. The person will be along this intended route or may have gone astray at any number of "decision points", which caused a diversion from the intended route.

Shaded relief maps are usually topographic maps that are colored or shaded, so the land surface looks 3-D (three dimensions). In actuality, a shaded relief map is only 2-D [two dimensions]. (A true 3-D map is a called a raised relief map.)

Generally, the "sun" in shaded-relief maps is in the northwest.

As part of the project to develop and standardize tools for environmental monitoring of dredged-sediment ocean dumping sites and for protection of wildlife habitats near them, Environment Canada's Environmental Protection Branch retained Géophysique GPR International Inc. to map the topography of dumping grounds off Anse à Beaufils using a combination of geophysical methods.
