CONT

DEF

One of the western boundary currents of the North Pacific subtropical gyre.

OBS

A deep, narrow, and swift current, it continues from the Philippines Current in a northeastward direction from Taiwan along the continental rise of the East China Sea, through Tokara Strait, and close to the eastern coast of Japan. At 35°N it separates from the coast and flows eastward into the Pacific as a free jet known as the Kuroshio Extension. It forms a marked temperature and salinity front with the Oyashio, which meets the Kuroshio Extension from the north and then flows parallel to it. Like all other western boundary currents, the Kuroshio develops instabilities and sheds eddies. Its unique characteristic is that south of Honshu it switches between three quasi-stable paths across the Izu Ridge at irregular intervals of 18 months to several years. Volume transport in the Kuroshio increases downstream and reaches 57 Sv... in the Kuroshio Extension, increasing seasonally by 15% during summer. The current's path in the extension is characterized by large meridional excursions in the so-called First and Second Crest at 145° and 152°E. On approaching the Shatsky Rise at 157°E, the Kuroshio Extension divides into several paths that tend to recombine before the Emperor Seamounts near 170°E cause the current to split again and disintegrate. The flow then continues as the North Pacific Current.

OBS

Black Stream: It’s also sometimes known as the Black Stream-the English translation of kuroshio, and an allusion to the deep blue of its water-and also as the Japan Current.

Domaine(s)
  • Océanographie
DEF

CONT

A pool of cold air can also become ’detached’ at lower latitudes, i. e. away from the mid-latitude westerly zone, and drift slowly over relatively warmer seas,(e. g. the Mediterranean), and lead to intense convective development, often taking on marked cyclonic characteristics through the troposphere, and giving rise to locally severe conditions due to heavy rainfall, severe thunderstorms and squally winds. Remnants of these types of cold pool will sometimes drift polewards in summer and bring outbreaks of severe convective activity to mid-latitude regions, as these features will destabilise hot/humid air masses.

DEF

Hysterical phenomena(abnormal reflexes) do not seem to be ideogenic even to intelligent patients who are good observers, because the idea that gave rise to them is no longer colored with affect and no longer marked out among other ideas and memories. The discharge of affect follows the principle of least resistance and takes place along those paths whose resistances have already been weakened by concurrent circumstances.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

Small, shallow depression which forms mainly in winter over some high-latitude seas within a polar or arctic air mass.

CONT

When arctic-origin air in winter flows southward(northward in the southern hemisphere) across(relatively) warmer seas, strong surface heating acts both to enhance the degree of instability, and trigger vigorous moist convective towers. This is sufficient alone to give rise to heavy, wintry showers/cumulonimbus clusters etc., but often marked troughing, or even a closed circulation in the isobaric flow is found; the resultant low-level convergence/positive vorticity enhancement, plus the localised concentration of the latent heat energy released, enhances development within the system, and an intense(but synoptically small) area of rain, hail, sleet or snow & squally winds can result-a polar low(or polar depression or polar meso-cyclone in some texts).

CONT

What is a polar low? Part of a diverse group of mesoscale weather systems (polar meso-cyclones). ... [There is] three types of polar meso-cyclones: -jet streak type, -arctic front type, -cold low type.

OBS

Polar mesocyclones: a term now used to encompass the whole ’family’ of disturbances resulting from arctic air flowing equatorward over progressively warmer seas; the term ’polar low’ is now often used only for ’extreme’ systems where gale or near gale-force winds are observed.

OBS

Its motion is approximately the same as the air stream in which it is embedded.
