An LF [low frequency]/MF [medium frequency] or UHF [ultra high frequency] radio beacon transmitting non-directional signals whereby the pilot of an aircraft equipped with direction-finding equipment can determine his or her bearing to or from the radio beacon and "home" on or track to or from the station.

When the radio beacon is installed in conjunction with the instrument landing system(ILS) marker, it is normally called a "marker beacon. "

A defined point on the final approach course of a nonprecision [sic] straight-in approach procedure from which normal descent from the minimum descent altitude (MDA) to the runway touchdown point may be commenced, provided the approach threshold of that runway, or approach lights, or other markings identifiable with the approach end of that runway are clearly visible to the pilot.

It is the point at which an approximate 3° slope from the touchdown point intercepts the MDA. A marker beacon used with an instrument landing system(ILS)(CAT [clear air turbulence] II) precision approach located between the middle marker and the end of the ILS runway, transmitting a radiation pattern keyed at six dots per second and indicating to the pilot, both aurally and visually, that he/she is at the designated decision height(DH), normally 100 ft above the touchdown zone elevation, on the ILS CAT II approach.
