[The] basket was designed for use in an oyster farm. Unlike the mussel basket[, it] would be submerged in seawater for prolonged periods of time as a part of the oyster harvesting process. As such, it needed to be made of material that would be impervious to corrosion and pitting from constant exposure to chlorides.... Being a wire basket, water could drain from the basket with ease, allowing the client to dry off their oysters and prepare them for the next stage after pulling the basket from the water.

OBS

These represent the quotient of the current and constant price estimates of value added in manufacturing adjusted, however, for changes in indirect taxes. Such indicators, which share the properties of the corresponding GNP deflator series for the overall economy, are best viewed in the present context as composite indicators of the cost(per unit of real value added) of all primary factors of production(including capital and "entrepreneurship", as well as labor). These indicators differ from final product prices in that they abstract from the costs of intermediate inputs obtained by the manufacturing sector from other sectors. The extrapolation beyond the most recent benchmark year is based on wholesale prices for manufactures adjusted to exclude the influence of changes in raw material prices.

The shearing stress necessary to induce a unit velocity flow gradient in a material.

OBS

In actual measurement, the viscosity coefficient of a material is obtained from the ratio of shearing stress to shearing rate. This assumes the ratio to be constant and independent of the shearing stress, a condition which is satisfied only by Newtonian fluids. Consequently, in all other cases, values obtained are apparent and represent one point of the flow curve. In the CGS system, the viscosity coefficient is expressed in poises, i. e. in dyne seconds per square centimetre, and in the International System of units in pascal seconds.

DEF

An engineered concrete structure located above natural grade that is closed by placement of a concrete cover and that is provided with vertical access (through an open top) for placement of the radioactive waste.

CONT

Figure 8 outlines the above-ground vault option. Its main elements include :. wastes disposed of above grade;. an engineered concrete cover over the wastes;. structural stability provided by the walls and cross-walls of the facility; and. voids between containerized wastes filled with nonstructural material(bulk wastes are placed in the vault, uncompacted, by an enclosed-conveyor materials handling system through holes in the roof). One major reason for building an above-ground vault is that it allows for constant surveillance.... Since any such facility would be exposed to the elements, natural decay would be a problem and constant maintenance would be required.

CONT

Aboveground vault disposal consists of placing the waste in engineered concrete structures located above natural grade. A vault is completely closed by placement of a concrete roof over each backfilled cell. The facility lacks any earthen cover system and relies principally on the structure to isolate the waste from the biosphere.

CONT

DEF

The speed at which light and other magnetic waves travel through empty space.

CONT

The velocity of light is 2.9979 x 108 m/s.

CONT

The speed of light in a vacuum is an important physical constant denoted by the letter c for "constant" or the Latin word "celeritas" meaning "swiftness". It is the speed of all electromagnetic radiations, including visible light, in a vacuum. More generally, it is the speed of anything having zero rest mass.... In metric units, the speed of light is exactly 299, 792, 458 metres per second(1, 079, 252, 848. 8 km/h). The fundamental SI unit of length, the metre, has been defined since October 21, 1983, as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299, 792, 458 of a second; any increase in the precision of the measurement of the speed of light would refine the definition of the metre, but not alter the numerical value of c. The approximate value of 3x108 m/s is commonly used in rough estimates. In imperial units, the speed of light is about 670, 616, 629. 2 miles per hour or 983, 571, 056 feet per second, which is about 186, 282, 397 miles per second, or roughly one foot per nanosecond. The speed of light when it passes through a transparent or translucent material medium, like glass or air, is slower than its speed in a vacuum. The ratio of c to the observed phase velocity is called the refractive index of the medium.

Controlled drug delivery occurs when a polymer, whether natural or synthetic, is judiciously combined with a drug or other active agent in such a way that the active agent is released from the material in a predesigned manner. The release of the active agent may be constant over a long period, it may be cyclic over a long period, or it may be triggered by the environment or other external events. Multi Material Moulding. Two raw material injection moulding: In this process, two materials are injected consecutively into two different mould cavities through separate nozzles to produce a moulded part. First one component is injected, then this part is transferred to another cavity by turning or pushing out part of the mould or by transferring the moulding into another mould, then the second component is injected. During composite injection moulding (Combiform), the second cavity is vacated by actuating a movable core. Two component injection moulding: In this process, two materials are injected through a nozzle into a mould cavity, resulting in a moulding with a clear separation between skin and core component. This process is also referred to as sandwich injection moulding.

OBS

Today the dividing line between [the] expressions ["two raw material injection moulding" and "two component injection moulding"] has become blurred as a result of the constant further development of the processes, new ideas and mould developments. GP 2000 Grout Pump. Description : The MBT GP2000 is a spiral(Rotor/Stator) pump used for mixing and pumping of cementitious grouts and the spraying of repair mortars and small volumes of shotcrete. It will deliver approximately 2m’ per hour of any pumpable material with an aggregate size up to 4mm. The stator has an adjustable clamp housing which maintains a constant output pressure and lengthens the service life of the pump parts. Recommended for : placement of grouts for encapsulating cables and rock anchors-particularly in mining applications, spraying of repair mortars, spraying of shotcrete.

OBS

In general terms, grouting refers to the injection of a suitable binding admixture into the ground as a means to fill voids, consolidate loose formations, stabilize structures, or as an isolating barrier. It can be classified under three main areas in construction applications. a. Cement grouting: A combination of mixtures such as cement/sand/bentonite is used to fill voids and can consolidate coarse soils, sands, gravels and the like. Usually pumped into a drilled bore hole under low to medium pressure or by the tube-et-manchette method. b. Chemical grouting ...c. Fissure/Permeation grouting...

A typical injection screw is ... in effect, a series of endless buckets; that is, a mechanical conveyor.

CONT

The injection screw is divided into three parts. The first half of the screw compresses the material and removes the air. The flight depth is constant. The second part(third quarter) of the screw has decreasing flight depths, thus reducing the volume. Reduction of the volume increases the friction of the polymer molecules as they rub over each other, increasing the temperature. At the end of this section all the material should be melted(plasticized). The third part(last quarter) of the screw is a pump. The flight depth is constant but smaller than the first section because melted material takes up less volume than powder.

A viscometer which consists of a spindle rotated in a container of a sample liquid. The principle involved is that the viscosity is directly proportional to the torque required to drive the spindle.

CONT

The principle of the rotation type viscosity measuring element or the rotational spindle type viscosity measuring element is that viscosity of a fluid is directly proportional to the torque produced by the resistance to shearing stress on a spindle rotating in a fluid.

CONT

In the torque viscometer, a sensor (spindle) is rotated at some speed through the same couple arrangement which allows the sensor to be displaced to an equilibrium position at which point the calibrated torque spring gives a reference to the viscosity of the fluid being measured. Different types of spindles and speeds may be used.

CONT

The rotating-vane-type viscosity measuring element depends upon the drag on a rotating member in contact with the material whose viscosity is to be measured. The vane or rotating element is driven by a synchronous electrical motor. The torque required to rotate the member of the vane is measured and is proportional to the viscosity in contact with the rotating element. The synchronous motor drives the cage at a constant speed. The upper spindle arm is coupled to the cage through a calibrated beryllium-copper spring. During measurement, the spring is wound up until its force exactly equals the viscous drag on the spindle; then the cage and spindle continue to operate at the same speed, but with a definite angular relationship to each other proportional to the torque on the spring.

Semiconductive Thin Film Detector. Using the known principle that the adsorption and desorption of gases cause a change in electrical conductivity of semiconductors, Seiyama et al. developed a new chromatographic detector for gaseous components.... The current, depending upon the resistance of the film, is converted to voltage by the variable resistance, which is fed without amplification to a recorder. Resistance also adjusts the input voltage of the recorder at desired sensitivity. Using zinc oxide as an example of a typical film material, the conductivity of its film maintains a fixed value when the nitrogen carrier gas is passed at a constant flow rate throught the borosilicate glass tube. When a small amount of another gas or vapor is added to the carrier gas, its conductivity is changed.

The unique results achieved with supercalendering are due to the intermediate fibrous rolls(sometimes referred to as bowls or filled rolls) which possess elastic or plastic properties. With the application of load on the nips, the metal rolls cause a depression or deformation on the fibrous rolls at the point of contact, and the deformation spreads out on either side of the nip(Figure 18-28). When rotated, this spread area will creep because of the constant effort of the material to return to its normal shape. This flow causes a relative motion of the filled roll surface against the metal roll surface, thus producing rolling friction, which helps to give the polishing and smoothing effects. The intensity of action is governed by the amount of plastic flow and by the nip contact pressure.

The term fin drain is given to this form of composite geotextile drain because the water conducting sheet is generally in the form of a fin projecting upwards from a pipe. The fin drain sheet itself is formed from a water conducting core backed with a geotextile filter on either one or both sides. Geotextile mats, nets, and waffled plastic sheets (sometimes called geospacers) may be used as the core material ... .

OBS

Geotextile nets consist of two sets of roughly round polymer strands that cross at a constant angle to give very open geotextile with large diamond or rectangle shaped apertures. This mesh-like appearance led to the term "mesh" being initially applied to this type of geotextile before the industry standardized on the term "net"....
