Maintenance... Adding maintenance to the equation generally results in lower total life-cycle costs than design-bid-build or simple design-build for two reasons. First, maintenance personnel are part of the proponent's value engineering process during preparation for the RFP [Request for Proposals] submission. This ensures a focus on system maintenance and minimizing life-cycle cost, in addition to engineering ingenuity. Second, a design-build-maintain contract optimizes construction costs to minimize overall life-cycle costs. The successful proponent is given the right incentives to increase the quality of construction material to reduce total life-cycle cost of the project. This benefit is maximized if the contractor maintains the vehicles, rail systems, rail infrastructure, and operates the maintenance facility. 1, record 5, English, - design%2Dbuild%2Dmaintain%20contract

A paraglider is made up of the wing, rigging(lines), small carabiner, and risers.... Lines. Commonly known as lines(a set of rigging) measuring variously between 0. 4-1. 7 mm, even 2. 2 mm, their high level of strength or weight resistance depends on their thickness and the properties of material used in its construction. They are usually concerned with a protective sheath to guard against ground friction and are made from dyneema, kevlar, spectra, superaramid and so on. The lines attach the wing to risers which in turn are attached to the pilots harness, and extend from the wings downward side in the order specified by the particular manufacturer, gradually tapering off in thickness and number via a series of quick links. Coated Felts. Some current thinking favours the use of coated organic roofing felts instead of saturated felts for the construction of built-up roofing membranes. In this case, the bitumen required for waterproofing has already been applied in a uniform coating at the manufacturing plant, and application is essentially the sticking together of sufficient layers to give the strength required. The heavier grades of coated felt have been used for many years in this and other countries as a single-layer roofing material on simply pitched roofs of barns and sheds. In more sophisticated roofing systems, several layers of coated felt are used with hot or cold adhesives and a surface protection of gravel or weathering coat of clay-stabilized asphalt emulsion. 2, record 27, English, - coated%20felt

Feutres recouverts d'enduit. 2, record 27, French, - feutre%20enduit

Examples of equity-related compensation measures include local purchasing and hiring policies(sometimes include employee training provisions), tax subsidies(e. g., payment of all or part of the property taxes of local residents, involving either only those most directly affected or the community as a whole), tipping fees(i. e., a tax on the material disposed of at the facility, either on a volume or gross receipt basis, with the funds earmarked for use by the local community), co-use of the facility(e. g., incorporating into the facility a landfill to dispose of municipal waste), bonus services(e. g., the provision of infrastructure such as schools, hospitals or other amenities which would enhance the community's development potential), and bonus facilities(e. g., construction of a research and/or educational centre focussed on some specific aspect of the proposed facility such as the waste itself or the technology required to manage it). 1, record 39, English, - equity%2Drelated%20compensation%20measure

Geomembrane : The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as : synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. These terms are not appropriate because :(i) synthetic, polymeric and plastic are too restrictive;(ii) geomembranes are not always used as liners;(iii) flexible membrane is redundant; and(iv) no material is absolutely impermeable or impervious. In addition, many users for these materials habitually designate them with trade names, which adds to the terminology confusion. Geomembranes should not be confused with other similar membranes used for such applications as single-ply roofing, floating covers and air supported roof. Also, geomembranes should not be confused with geotextiles [which are permeable by construction]. 2, record 42, English, - geomembrane

The Spanish term "cordaje" and the French cognate "cordage" are both collective nouns that denote the set of strings that make up the "stringbed". Another appropriate English equivalent would be "racquet strings"-in the plural. In comparison, the singular term "cuerda" denotes the thin material we call "string" in English. When used in the plural, "cuerdas" and "cordes" are synonomous with "cordaje" and "cordage" respectively. Another point to watch out for : the Spanish term "cordaje" is polysemous. It can denote the process of putting strings on a tennis racquet(=stringing) or it can denote the end product, i. e. the set of strings found on a tennis racquet. Various types of strings used today : multilfilament, multicore(with or without wraps), solid core, textured, unique, construction, hybrid. 3, record 45, English, - strings

Geomembranes made in situ(ie, at the construction site) are usually continuous(ie, with no seam) and are made by spraying or otherwise placing a hot or cold viscous material onto a substrate. The geomembranes made by spraying are commonly referred to as "spray-applied geomembranes" or "spray-on geomembranes". The base product of the sprayed material is commonly asphalt, an asphalt-elastomer compound... or a polymer such as polyurethane. The sprayed material forms a continuous flexible film with little or no tack after curing. If the material is applied onto an existing surface(ie, earth or concrete) the spray-applied geomembrane is non-reinforced. If the material is applied onto a fabric or geotextile, the resulting membrane is reinforced.... 1, record 62, English, - spray%2Dapplied%20geomembrane

Paste backfill is defined as an engineered mixture of fine solid particles(with binder) and water, containing between 72% and 85% solids by weight. Particles in a paste mixture will not settle out of the mixture if allowed to remain stationary in a tank or in a pipeline. It can be placed in stopes with or without binder addition depending on the strength requirements for backfill. Improved pumping technology, environmental concerns and the need for a low cost/high strength fill in mines are driving mine operators to consider paste backfill as a tailings management and mine backfill alternative. The main advantages and disadvantages of a paste backfill system over a conventional hydraulic backfill plant are generally accepted as :... higher strengths can be achieved with an equivalent cement content; drainage of water and slimes from the fill are minimized, reducing the need for bulkhead construction and extensive drainage works. This feature also reduces maintenance on sumps and mine de-watering pumps; in some cases, unclassified tailings can be used to make paste rather than just the coarse fraction as is the case for hydraulic backfill; shorter stope cycle times can be achieved because an equivalent strength can be achieved in a shorter time with paste backfill; paste backfill systems achieve lower porosities than conventional fill thereby increasing the tonnage of material that can be disposed of underground; and, since paste backfill is deposited as a non-segregated mass of backfill(because cement particles are not displaced by the internal movements of the draining water), more predictable strength properties for the fill can be achieved. 2, record 77, English, - paste%20backfilling%20system
Record number: 77, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Paste backfilling of mines. A number of mines are installing paste fill systems to replace the current sand fill method. The justification and economies of this conversion include: higher production levels (less wait for dewatering), increased grade of ore to the mill, decrease of stope ore left as pillars, improved haulage with the removal of excess moisture, increased filling rates, and a higher strength fill with less waiting time. The unique problems associated with paste fill applications range from extremely rapid system wear to paste separation and system blockage. 3, record 77, English, - paste%20backfilling%20system

Remblayage. 2, record 77, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20remblayage%20par%20p%C3%A2te

By combining proteins from viruses with inorganic elements commonly used as semiconductors, the UT Austin research team produced hybrid materials called electronic biocomposite materials. Biocomposite materials exist in nature in the form of such substances as shell and bone. By extending the processes that result in naturally occurring biocomposites to substances commonly used in construction of electronic components, the scientists said they are paving the way for development of a host of technological marvels - potential building blocks for transistors, wires, connectors, sensors and computer chips far smaller than anything manufactured so far. 5, record 79, English, - biocomposite

The accumulator is intended for heating fuel components in the rocket and space engines and can be used in space engineering, aircraft and other branches of industry. The task of increasing gas heating efficiency, reducing mass of the construction, diminution of dimensions and lowering thermal and hydraulic losses of heated gas is solved by making a heat accumulating element as a mono-unit in the form of cylinder. The covers with branch pipes are recessed in the ends of the mono-unit. The covers are butt joined to mono-unit on conical surfaces through pressurizing end seals at forming the collectors for gas feed and discharge. Plate electric heater and channels or annular slot for flowing gas are located along the longitudinal axis. The axis of channels or annular slot location divides the mass of heat accumulating element into two equal parts. In so doing, porous insert or a set of badly stream-lined bodies is in the channels or annular slot. All units of heat accumulator are coated with gas-dense material. 2, record 82, English, - annular%20slot
