Maintenance... Adding maintenance to the equation generally results in lower total life-cycle costs than design-bid-build or simple design-build for two reasons. First, maintenance personnel are part of the proponent's value engineering process during preparation for the RFP [Request for Proposals] submission. This ensures a focus on system maintenance and minimizing life-cycle cost, in addition to engineering ingenuity. Second, a design-build-maintain contract optimizes construction costs to minimize overall life-cycle costs. The successful proponent is given the right incentives to increase the quality of construction material to reduce total life-cycle cost of the project. This benefit is maximized if the contractor maintains the vehicles, rail systems, rail infrastructure, and operates the maintenance facility. 1, record 1, English, - design%2Dbuild%2Dmaintain%20contract

The Thixoforming Group in the Department of Engineering Materials at the University of Sheffield undertakes research and development into the forming of alloys and composites in the semi-solid state(SSM). This process is commonly called thixoforming(thixocasting or thixoforging) and possesses some of the advantages of both casting and forging. Initially the material behaves in the semi-solid condition like a solid(it can be picked up and holds it shape unsupported), but when injected into a die it flows like a liquid to take the form of the die accurately, as in die-casting. However, the structure is fine and uniform, virtually free of porosity, and the product may be heat-treated to give mechanical properties superior to those of castings. The thermal shock to the die is less than that given by a liquid, which means that higher melting point alloys-which cannot easily be diecast-may nevertheless be thixocast. 1, record 6, English, - thixoforming

The starting point of any breeding program is the parent material. Since the breeder cannot as yet create or modify genes to suit his requirements(this may be possible in the future by a technique called genetic engineering) he must choose parents already endowed with the genes for the qualities he wants in the new varieties. Because the new variety must be adapted into growing conditions of Western Canada, and above all, must possess milling and baking qualities characteristic of wheat grown in that area, one of the parents will usually be a typical Canadian variety. The other will be the carrier of the gene the plant breeder wishes to introduce into the Canadian variety, for example, a gene for resistance to a particular strain of stem rust. 1, record 8, English, - parent%20material

1, record 8, French, - lign%C3%A9e%20parentale

Nondestructive testing(NDT) is a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage. Because NDT does not permanently alter the article being inspected, it is a highly-valuable technique that can save both money and time in product evaluation, troubleshooting, and research. Common NDT methods include ultrasonic, magnetic-particle, liquid penetrant, radiographic, and eddy-current testing. NDT is a commonly-used tool in forensic engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, systems engineering, medicine, and art. 5, record 11, English, - nondestructive%20testing

Geomembranes are very low permeability membrane liners and barriers used with any geotechnical engineering based material so as to control fluid migration in a man-made project, structure or system. 2, record 18, English, - geomembrane
Record number: 18, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Geomembrane: The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as: synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. These terms are not appropriate because: (i) synthetic, polymeric and plastic are too restrictive; (ii) geomembranes are not always used as liners; (iii) flexible membrane is redundant; and (iv) no material is absolutely impermeable or impervious. In addition, many users for these materials habitually designate them with trade names, which adds to the terminology confusion. Geomembranes should not be confused with other similar membranes used for such applications as single-ply roofing, floating covers and air supported roof. Also, geomembranes should not be confused with geotextiles [which are permeable by construction]. 2, record 18, English, - geomembrane

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council(NSERC) endorsed a proposal for a national synchrotron light source to be located at the Saskatchewan Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Saskatchewan. Since 1993, NSERC has provided support to the Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation(CISR) to prepare a proposal for a synchrotron that would fit the needs of the majority of current and potential Canadian synchrotron users. The Canadian Light Source is a research tool that would serve a very wide range of disciplines, for both academic and industrial research. Following a thorough review of the material presented, the NSERC endorsed the proposal from the University of Saskatchewan to meet Canada's need for a source of synchrotron light by constructing and operating the national facility called the Canadian Light Source(CLS) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. 1, record 25, English, - Canadian%20Light%20Source

Engineering controls help reduce exposure to potential hazards either by isolating the hazard or by removing it from the work environment. Engineering controls include mechanical ventilation and process enclosure. They are important because they are built into the work process. Engineering controls are usually preferred to other control measures such as the use of personal protective equipment. Substitution of a less hazardous material or industrial process is the best way to reduce a hazard and is often considered to be a type of engineering control. 2, record 28, English, - engineering%20control

2, record 28, French, - mesure%20d%27ing%C3%A9nierie

The definition of rock from an engineering or functional viewpoint is complicated by structures and defects. A rock that is hard but fractured may be easier to excavate than a softer but more coherent material. Although the fractured rock is easier to excavate, it may require bracing to support it in a deep excavation, whereas the soft rock may stand without support. 2, record 29, English, - soft%20rock

An imprecise term used to denote materials that are more coherent than soils, yet are less coherent than many rocks. Two empirical definitions are that a soft rock does not need to be excavated by blasting, and that a soft rock has an unconfined compressive strength of between 400 and 1000 kN/m². It may be noted that to the geologist all sedimentary rocks are termed soft rocks, which may lead to confusion in an engineering context, since many sedimentary rocks cannot be excavated mechanically. 3, record 29, English, - soft%20rock

2, record 32, French, - transfert%20de%20masse

The accumulator is intended for heating fuel components in the rocket and space engines and can be used in space engineering, aircraft and other branches of industry. The task of increasing gas heating efficiency, reducing mass of the construction, diminution of dimensions and lowering thermal and hydraulic losses of heated gas is solved by making a heat accumulating element as a mono-unit in the form of cylinder. The covers with branch pipes are recessed in the ends of the mono-unit. The covers are butt joined to mono-unit on conical surfaces through pressurizing end seals at forming the collectors for gas feed and discharge. Plate electric heater and channels or annular slot for flowing gas are located along the longitudinal axis. The axis of channels or annular slot location divides the mass of heat accumulating element into two equal parts. In so doing, porous insert or a set of badly stream-lined bodies is in the channels or annular slot. All units of heat accumulator are coated with gas-dense material. 2, record 33, English, - annular%20slot

Magnetic Properties of Nanocrystalline Metals. Nanocrystalline materials represent one form of grain boundary engineering which increases the intercrystalline volume fraction of a material. It has been shown that this can affect mechanical, chemical, magnetic, kinetic and electrical properties. Nanomaterials produced by electrodeposition are porosity free and therefore yield their true intrinsic properties. However when assessing the intrinsic properties of nanocrystalline electrodeposits, microstructural and texture differences must be taken into consideration.(Department of Materials and Metallurgical, Engineering, Queen's University, Kingston, ON, Canada),(Department of Metallurgical Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, Que, Canada)(<a href="http ://iptsg. epfl. ch/aps/BAPSMAR96/abs/S3650003. html" title="http ://iptsg. epfl. ch/aps/BAPSMAR96/abs/S3650003. html">http ://iptsg. epfl. ch/aps/BAPSMAR96/abs/S3650003. html</a>) 1, record 46, English, - nanocrystalline%20metal

Geomembranes are very low permeability membrane liners and barriers used with any geotechnical engineering based material so as to control fluid migrations in a man-made project, structure or system. The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as : synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. 1, record 56, English, - barrier

As a groundwater pollution control mechanism, the use of a liner on the bottom and sides of a landfill has been considered necessary for many years. The types of liners that have been used are ... numerous ... but the predominant liner material until recently has been clay .... 2, record 57, English, - landfill%20liner
