Severe accidents in light-water reactors could lead to the flow of molten core material from the initial core region of the reactor vessel to the lower plenum. Steam explosions have been predicted to occur as a result of the contact of the melt with water available in the plenum. It is presently judged by many workers, that the magnitude of the energy released during such an in-vessel explosion would be insufficient to lead to failure of the containment building … 3, record 1, English, - in%2Dvessel%20explosion

Beginning in the late 1970s there were unconfirmed reports of an event in the Urals that resulted in widespread contamination of the environs. We now know that this was a chemical explosion in a high level waste storage tank in 1957. This chemical explosion resulted in 20 MCi of radioactive material thrown out from the tank and 2 MCi were dispersed downwind as a plume. This plume contaminated about 23, 000 square kilometers and became known as the "Eastern Urals Radioactive Trace(EURT) ". About 270, 000 persons were exposed and 8, 000 were relocated within periods ranging from 10 to 670 days after the explosion. 2, record 8, English, - Eastern%20Urals%20Radioactive%20Trace

Volcanic craters are formed either by explosion or collapse.... Collapse craters are formed when the pressure of the molten rock, or magma, inside a volcano can no longer support the weight of the rock or lava above it. This may happen after most of the magma has been drained away during an eruption of the volcano. The material that is no longer supported collapses into the space previously occupied by the magma, thus forming a crater. Well-known examples of collapse craters are found on the summit of Mauna Loa in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. 4, record 9, English, - collapse%20crater

The Controlled Products Regulations describe technical criteria for identifying materials which are classified as dangerously reactive. A dangerously reactive material can react vigorously : with water to produce a very toxic gas; on its own by polymerization or decomposition; or under conditions of shock, or an increase in pressure or temperature. A dangerously reactive material may cause a fire, explosion or other hazardous condition. It is very important to know which conditions(such as shock, heating or contact with water) may set off the dangerous reaction so that appropriate preventive measures can be taken. 3, record 10, English, - dangerously%20reactive%20material

2, record 10, French, - mati%C3%A8re%20dangereusement%20r%C3%A9active

Peroxide Forming Chemicals. Materials that are susceptible to peroxide formation(i. e., autooxidation) are ones that typically react with air, moisture or impurities and produce a change in their chemical composition in normal storage. The peroxides that form are less volatile than the solvent itself and thus tend to concentrate. This is particularly dangerous if peroxides are present during a distillation, where the applied heat to the concentrated solution may trigger a violent explosion. Equally dangerous is to allow a container of this material to evaporate to dryness, leaving the crystals of peroxide at the bottom of the container. 4, record 14, English, - peroxide%20forming%20chemical

Chemicals that are sensitive to peroxide formation can be broken into three categories .... A. Peroxide hazard after prolonged storage. Form potentially explosive peroxides without concentrating. B. Detonation is a process in which the ... explosive reaction takes place within a high-velocity shock wave known as the "detonation wave" or "reaction shock". This wave generally propagates at constant velocity from below 800 to above 8500 meters/sec, depending on the explosive, its density and physical state. Detonation velocity may be measured accurately by direct flame photography ... and by electronic chronographs. 7, record 20, English, - detonation%20velocity

Vitesse de détonation. [...] 2, record 20, French, - vitesse%20de%20d%C3%A9tonation

AFEX Process. The ammonia freeze explosion process is a pretreatment process developed at Texas A&M University. The fibrous material is soaked in high pressure liquid ammonia at elevated temperatures. When the pressure is released, the ammonia evaporates rapidly, fracturing the fibre structure, making it susceptible to enzyme hydrolysis. Residual ammonia in the disrupted fibre provides a nitrogen source for the fermenting microbes. The process was demonstrated at a pilot scale, but demonstration or full scale production had not been achieved.
