Radiation damage in solids … Because the particles … have different energies and different ranges, the distance from the site of formation to the region where they cause damage is different. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself(also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. To this end a distinction is made between a microdispersed and a macrodispersed fuel. A fuel is called microdispersed if the size of the fissile inclusions is less than 10 [micrometers], and otherwise is called macrodispersed. Microdispersed fuels can be produced either by infiltration or by compression of a mixture of matrix grains and fissile grains, while macrodispersed fuels can be produced by compression only. The damage effects in microdispersed fuels will approach those in a solid solution, while the radiation effects in macrodispersed fuels will mainly occur in the inclusions themselves and in a thin matrix layer around the inclusion, predominantly due to neutron damage. 1, record 10, English, - microdispersed%20fuel

High ionic strength solutions of electrolytes do tend to cause the desorption of adsorbed proteins. The extent of this depends on the specific enzyme and support material involved, pH, temperature, and perhaps other variables... [Thus, ] an inherent snag in the use of physical adsorption for enzyme immobilization... is the reversible nature of the bonding of enzyme to support... One factor which often causes desorption is the addition of substrate to the enzyme preparation. This is a particular hazard, for although other factors which might cause desorption(such as fluctuation in pH, temperature, or ionic strength) can be controlled, no enzyme can work without its substrate. 3, record 11, English, - desorption

Stratigraphic Description.-Stratification, or the layering sequence of the surficial materials, is another factor that will affect the erodibility of the bank. Two banks containing the same materials may have different erodibility characteristics depending on how erodible materials are stratified within the profile of the bank. 3, record 14, French, - description%20stratigraphique

Jetted wells, similar to drilled wells, are more common in sandy soils than in clay formations. A high-velocity stream of water is forced into the soil, then a jetting tool(point) is pushed into the loosened material to provide access for the well casing that follows. The casing of a jetted well often does not extend above the ground surface, a factor that both allows contaminants to enter the well and makes it difficult to later locate and inspect the well. 2, record 18, English, - jetted%20well

The exposure matrix was developed to account for job, plant, and era dependent differences in TCDD [2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin] exposure. The TCDD exposure estimates are based on(1) the concentration of TCDD in micrograms per gram present in process materials;(2) the duration of exposure to TCDD contamination, expressed as a fraction of a work day; and(3) a qualitative contact factor(0. 05-1. 5) to account for the extent of worker contact with the TCDD contaminated material. These three factors are multiplied together to yield a daily TCDD exposure score. The sum of the daily exposure scores constituted an individual' s cumulative exposure score. Daily TCDD exposure scores range from 0. 001 to 1250. Cumulative TCDD exposure scores are distributed from 0. 002 to 1, 651, 611 exposure score days. The TCDD cumulative exposure score, which incorporates both duration and level of exposure, provides a means for ranking workers for evaluating the relationship between TCDD exposure and mortality in a retrospective cohort study analysis. 2, record 26, English, - exposure%20score

Grading is the process of moving soil to change the form of the land. Cutting is the removal of soil and filling is the addition of soil. Shrinkage factor is the volume of soil lost after cut material is placed as fill. It is usually desirable to balance the cut and fill at a site. Exporting or importing soil is a costly operation compared to moving soil on site. The cost of moving soil at the site is about 1/6 that of importing soil and about 1/3 that of exporting soil, unless of course the export material may be sold. Another reason to avoid importing soil is to avoid complications which may result from mixing different soil types. 1, record 42, English, - balance%20the%20cut%20and%20fill
