Compound Slides(CS). A compound landslide is composed of a large host landslide... that encompasses smaller secondary landslides... The host landslide is a slow-moving landslide set on a gentle slope(<20°) of epiclastic materials. Its surface is irregular, with depressions, bulges, scarps and counterscarps and distensile, compressive and strike cracks. The movement of the host landslide can generate failures that favor secondary landslides located mostly along the steepest slopes of the host landslide(scarps and toe). Diverse types of secondary landslides may be observed on the same host landslide. Multiple levels of groundwater flow are commonly formed within compound landslides due to the presence of multiple low permeability surfaces(faults, cracks, material heterogeneities, and shear planes). An increase in the water table tends to accelerate host landslides and may contribute to secondary landslide failure. 1, record 2, English, - host%20landslide

Kidney stones are hard, pebble-like pieces of material that form in one or both of your kidneys when high levels of certain minerals are in your urine.... Kidney stones vary in size and shape. They may be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a pea. Rarely, some kidney stones are as big as golf balls. Kidney stones may be smooth or jagged and are usually yellow or brown. A small kidney stone may pass through your urinary tract on its own, causing little or no pain. A larger kidney stone may get stuck along the way. A kidney stone that gets stuck can block your flow of urine, causing severe pain or bleeding. 2, record 5, English, - kidney%20stone

... channeling is a problem specific to pool sand filters. When the sand(or crushed glass) media captures enough material that changes its physical properties, [the] sand's ability to screen particles out of water is reduced. It creates uneven pressure spots where water is trying to force its way through the media. Eventually, these uneven pressure spots in the filter can form an opening, called a channel. When the channel opens up enough, unfiltered water can flow through it and bypass the majority of the sand.... Cloudy pool water is almost inevitable at that point. 3, record 12, English, - channelled%20filter

2, record 15, French, - fibre%20scintillante

The shearing stress necessary to induce a unit velocity flow gradient in a material. 2, record 32, English, - viscosity%20coefficient
Record number: 32, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In actual measurement, the viscosity coefficient of a material is obtained from the ratio of shearing stress to shearing rate. This assumes the ratio to be constant and independent of the shearing stress, a condition which is satisfied only by Newtonian fluids. Consequently, in all other cases, values obtained are apparent and represent one point of the flow curve. In the CGS system, the viscosity coefficient is expressed in poises, i. e. in dyne seconds per square centimetre, and in the International System of units in pascal seconds. 2, record 32, English, - viscosity%20coefficient

2, record 40, French, - chimio%2Dembolisation

With the difference frequency between oscillators adjusted to zero with pure carrier gas flowing through the detector, the presence of a foreign vapor in the cell will produce a different frequency which is linearly related to the amount of material introduced through an injection port in the carrier gas stream and inversely proportional to the absolute temperature for a given component at a constant density or concentration in the cell and for a particular operating frequency. 2, record 41, English, - Clapp%20oscillator

In older pavements laid over inadequate bases or poor subgrades, slabs may settle. These can be successfully raised several inches by slabjacking. Holes are drilled through the slab at intervals, and various mixtures (oil and cement, finely ground limestone or sand, fly ash, or portland cement combined with sufficient water to permit pumping) are forced through the holes to the underside of the pavement. The consistency of the mix and the pressure to be used depend on the application. The pressure raises the slab and holds it in place until the grout hardens. 3, record 50, English, - undersealing

A cause of non-ideal flows in biochemical reactors. It is caused by excessive pressure drops, irregular packing of the support and the uneven application of the substrate to the column. Thus the fluid tends to find a preferential path through the column, usually down one side when friction of substrate with packing material is greater than that with the walls, or down the centre of the column when friction of substrate with the walls slows fluid flow. Therefore some of the particles in the column do not come into contact with the substrate, and contact with the rest of the particles is variable. 2, record 52, English, - channelling
Record number: 52, Textual support number: 1 CONT
In stirred reactors, better mixing can only be achieved by increasing the stirrer speed, by decreasing the viscosity of the substrate or the concentration of biocatalyst particles, or by baffling the reactor more efficiently. In packed-bed reactors, back-mixing, channelling and temperature gradients within the reactor are the most important causes of deviations from plug-flow behaviour and are expressed as the increase in reactor size needed to achieve the required productivity... Plug-flow is encouraged by the use of evensized, smooth, spherical, evenly packed support particles and by the absence of accumulated solids or gases in the column. 3, record 52, English, - channelling

Primary clogging is a consequence of the sudden drastic changes in the soil/water boundary conditions, caused by the installation of the subsurface drainage system, and the resulting water flow, including particle transport due to the high hydraulic gradients, towards the newly installed pipes. In 1980s, St. Lawrence Technologies Inc.(SLT, as a partner in the Bio-Hol joint venture) in Canada, collaborated with the Tennessee Valley Authority(TVA) in the USA and the Swedish Ethanol Development Foundation, developed a two stage hydrolysis process called the CASH process(Canada, America, Sweden Hydrolysis) at pilot plant scale for the conversion of wood feedstock to ethanol(O’Boyle et al., 1991). In the first stage of the process, TVA used the Sunds Defibrator to prehydrolyse pine wood chips under mildly acidic conditions. The pretreated material was then hydrolysed in the SLT plug flow reactor to convert cellulose to glucose. The yield of the conversion from cellulose to glucose exceeded 50%, which was close to the theoretical yield in dilute acid hydrolysis(Malester et al., 1992). The bioreactor "plug" is made of slotted PVC pipe which is screw cap sealed at each end. Each plug is loaded with an inert porous material which serves as a structural support matrix for the microorganisms. The seed cultures in the bioplugs are a mixture of microorganisms selected for their abilities to biodegrade the contaminants of concern... The bioplugs are strategically inserted into the contaminated zone(s). Liquids then flow through the plugs by a pressure gradient created using compressed air. This flow acts to accelerate the movement of ground or irrigation water through the immobilized bed; thereby, facilitating the mineralization of organics within the aqueous phase and the bulk generation of biomass which bleeds off the bed. 1, record 62, English, - bioplug

The movement of a free electron from atom to atom leaves a hole in the atom it left. This hole is quickly filled by another free electron. As this movement is transmitted throughout the conductor, an electric current is created from the negative to the positive. At the same time, the "hole" has been moved backward in the conductor as one free electron after another takes its place in a sort of chain reaction. "Hole flow" is from positive to negative. Current flow in a transistor, then, may be either electron movement or hole flow, depending on the type of material, and this determines the type of transistor it is as well. 2, record 76, English, - hole%20flow

We have been successful in elucidating the structures that dominate the behavior of fluidized suspensions and in applying these insights to practical flows. 3, record 79, English, - fluidized%20suspension

1, record 79, French, - suspension%20fluidis%C3%A9e

A certain class of ceramic and metallic materials can be manufactured by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method. Even though by now this process has included reaction systems of the solid-gas and solid-liquid types, the original work was directed towards the reactions investigated where not only the reactants but also the final products formed in the solid phase. Condensed phase combustion is a complex phenomenon of theoretical and practical interest, in particular, as a method to synthesize materials. This combustion synthesis process involves a self-sustained combustion wave which propagates through initial reactants converting them into a desired product. In condensed phase combustion the initial reactants as well as final, and possibly intermediate products, remain in the condensed phase throughout the reaction. Though the combustion process occurs in a heterogeneous medium composed of reactive particles, typical models of condensed phase combustion treat the medium as homogeneous. 4, record 81, English, - condensed%2Dphase%20combustion

ionization smoke detector. Smoke detectors utilizing the ionization principle are usually of the spot type. An ionization smoke detector has a small amount of radioactive material which ionizes the air in the sensing chamber, thus rendering it conductive and premitting a current flow through the air between two charged electrodes. This gives the sensing chamber an effective electrical conductance. When smoke particles enter the ionization area, they decrease the conductance of the air by attaching themselves to the ions, causing a reduction in mobility. When the conductance is less than a predetermined level, the detector responds. 7, record 88, English, - ionization%20chamber%20smoke%20detector

It is based on the principle that if two electrodes are inserted in the ground, and if an external voltage is applied across them, there will be a flow of current through the earth from one electrode to the other. If the medium through which the current flows is homogeneous in its electrical properties, the flow lines will be regular and, in a horizontal plane, symmetrical about the line joining the electrodes. Any inhomogeneities in these properties will cause distortions in the lines of current flow. Such distortions indicate the existence of buried material with higher conductivity than its surroundings, so that it attracts the flow lines toward itself, or with lower conductivity so that it tends to force the lines into the surrounding medium. 1, record 89, English, - equipotential%20line%20method

The ’flip-side’ of the Peltier effect is the Seebeck effect-when thermal energy moves through an electrically-conductive material, charge carriers are transported by the heat. Thus when you create a temperature difference across a thermoelectric device, the movement of heat and charge carriers creates an electrical pressure(called Seebeck voltage). If an electrical load is connected across the device, current will flow-if not, the pressure builds to a steady state condition and a ’no-load’ voltage will be present. 3, record 90, English, - Seebeck%20voltage

An assembly line is designed by determining the sequences of operations for manufacture of each product component as well as the final product. Each movement of material is made as simple and short as possible with no cross flow or backtracking. Work assignments, numbers of machines, and production rates are programmed so that all operations performed along the line are compatible. 3, record 96, English, - assembly%20line

Forward biasing of a P-N junction takes place when the polarity of the source voltage is positive to the P material and negative to the N material. This condition causes a current flow. The depletion zone of the device is reduced and majority current carriers are driven toward the junction. One junction of a transistor must be forward biased when it operates. 1, record 97, English, - forward%20biasing
