Jus in bello, also referred to as international humanitarian law(IHL), applies to all warring parties irrespective of the reasons for the conflict. It does not speak to whether or not the cause of war is just. Instead, this body of law seeks to protect war victims and their fundamental rights, no matter to which party they belong. 4, record 2, English, - international%20humanitarian%20law
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Necessity and proportionality have always been core principles of both branches of the jus belli principles that apply to both the authority to employ military force and the regulation of actual employment. However, in the jus ad bellum context, they have never before been viewed as principles to regulate operational and tactical execution. Instead, in that context they frame the legality of national or multinational resort to military force in self-defense. Once the decision is made to employ force pursuant to this authority, the jus in bello variant of these principles (necessity of the mission and proportionality of collateral damage) operate to regulate the application of combat power during mission execution (in other words, they provide the foundation for the regulation of the application of combat power in the context of the self-defense-justified mission). 5, record 2, English, - international%20humanitarian%20law

A person who actively seeks to learn about the challenges of a person or group of people experiencing discrimination, and who works in solidarity with them to fight against oppression. 2, record 3, English, - ally
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Being an ally is not simply a matter of identity; it involves taking action. Allies can take action in a variety of ways. They can advocate for the rights of those who experience discrimination or help support their needs. They can also work actively from within social, political or economic structures to challenge and eliminate oppressive policies and practices. 2, record 3, English, - ally
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Ideally, an ally recognizes and understands their own privilege, which they can use to help those they have allied with. An ally can also experience discrimination in one area of their life, even if they have certain privileges in another. For example, an Indigenous man may experience discrimination as an Indigenous person but have certain privileges as a man. An Indigenous man can therefore be an ally to women. Similarly, a gay man can be an ally to trans people. 2, record 3, English, - ally

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
3, record 3, French, - personne%20alli%C3%A9e
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 OBS
3, record 3, French, - personne%20alli%C3%A9e

Reasonable expectation of privacy-Section 8 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. The Supreme Court of Canada has defined as a "search" any state action that engages a reasonable expectation of privacy. The concept of a "reasonable expectation of privacy" is therefore employed to determine whether, as a threshold matter, the protections of Section 8 are engaged. The degree of this privacy expectation is then used in the balancing exercise to determine whether a law authorizing a search is reasonable – i. e. whether it is justifiable in light of the state's objective, taking into account any safeguards provided for in the law. 2, record 5, English, - reasonable%20expectation%20of%20privacy
