CONT

[The] paper investigates the Maximum Acquisition Values(MAVs) of weeding robots and their determinants in both organic and conventional sugar beet farming in Germany. The MAV is defined in [the] paper as the price of the weeding robot that renders the same net profit as the current weeding methods. For [the] analysis, a Monte Carlo simulation approach is used, combined with empirical data and data collected from weeding robot companies. The results show that the MAVs of mechanical weeding robots for organic farming are substantially higher than that of spot spraying robots for conventional farming.

CONT

The SFR is a key element of any Mars Sample Return mission. Landing with the Mars Ascent Vehicle(MAV), it is required to rapidly retrieve samples from their remote cached location and return them to the MAV for transfer to orbit.

OBS

The rover, a small vehicle approximately 1 metre wide by 1.5 metres long, will be capable of withstanding the harsh atmosphere of Mars and its challenging terrain. The ’Sample Fetch Rover’ is planned to be part of the mission concepts the European Space Agency (ESA) is exploring with NASA [National Aeronautics and Space Administration] for an international Mars Sample Return campaign between 2020 and 2030.

CONT

A potential future Mars sample caching mission would acquire surface core samples with a rover and then store the samples in a canister that could be returned to Earth. The samples would likely be stored in individual sample tubes which are sealed. Significant care would be required to minimize contamination of the samples by Earth-source contaminants or by cross-contamination with material from other Mars sampling locations. Additionally, the system of sampling tool, sampling tool deployment device, and sample handling and encapsulation system would need to have minimal mass in order to fit on a small caching rover such as a MER-class rover. Past solutions have been problematic for various reasons including total system mass, sample contamination, or robustness. This problem applies to various potential future Mars Sample Return(MSR) mission architectures for returning samples from Mars to Earth including 1) a sample caching mission followed by a sample return mission where the caching mission rover would acquire and cache samples and a later sample return mission would have a fetch rover that retrieves the sample cache and return it to the landers Mars Ascent Vehicle(MAV) for return to Earth, 2) an Astrobiology Field Laboratory mission with caching which would provide the caching mission function while also including in-situ sample analysis, and 3) a combined sampling and return mission which would combine the sample caching and return to Earth functions.

After its initial construction, Rocky 7 was used for desert field tests in 1996 and 1997. Following that, it was used for several years of algorithm development and testing, including autonomous rock grasping, and wheel-terrain contact estimation techniques. From 2001 onward, it has been a test bed for CLARAty software development. More recently it has been considered a likely candidate for "fetch" rover studies for Mars Sample Return technology development.

DARPA [Defense Advanced Research Project Agency] says the MAV can be no larger than 6 inches across, and "capable of performing a useful military mission at an affordable cost". A soldier should be able to reach into his backpack, pop out a micro vehicle, hand-launch it, and then remotely monitor what it detects. More combative versions might act as minicruise missiles or radar-zappers.(Popular Science, January 1998, p. 54).
