La notion de développement soutenable implique [...] des limites, [...] celles qu'imposent l'état actuel de nos techniques et de l'organisation de l'activité humaine ainsi que la capacité de la biosphère de supporter les effets de l'activité humaine. Dans ce cas, les besoins signifient les besoins essentiels tels que l'alimentation, l'énergie, l'eau et l'hygiène. Quoique la notion des limites environnementales soit implicite, le rapport Brundtland entend par limites non pas tant les limites physiques (capacité biologique), mais plutôt les limites technologiques et organisationnelles.

The concept of sustainability is directly related to carrying capacity. "Carrying capacity" can be defined as "the maximal population size of a given species that an area can support without reducing its ability to support the same species in the future. "
