Ply : a layer of felt in a built-up roof membrane system. A four-ply membrane system has four layers of felt.

CONT

The performance of the membrane depends, to a very large measure, on the method of laying. There is only one in general use in Canada, and it may be referred to as the shingle method.... It is simple to understand, and fast and easy to carry out. Half-lapping gives a two-ply, two-thirds lapping a three-ply, and three-quarters lapping a four-ply roofing membrane. It has the very serious disadvantage that any wrinkling of felts or lifting at the laps tends to provide a direct path to the supporting insulation or deck. This is why it is considered so essential with this method to achieve intimate contact between plies without wrinkles or fishmouths.

OBS

OBS

An essentially impermeable membrane used with foundation, soil, rock, earth or any other geotechnical engineering-related material as an integral part of human-made project, structure, or system.

CONT

Geomembranes are very low permeability membrane liners and barriers used with any geotechnical engineering based material so as to control fluid migration in a man-made project, structure or system.

OBS

Geomembrane: The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as: synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. These terms are not appropriate because: (i) synthetic, polymeric and plastic are too restrictive; (ii) geomembranes are not always used as liners; (iii) flexible membrane is redundant; and (iv) no material is absolutely impermeable or impervious. In addition, many users for these materials habitually designate them with trade names, which adds to the terminology confusion. Geomembranes should not be confused with other similar membranes used for such applications as single-ply roofing, floating covers and air supported roof. Also, geomembranes should not be confused with geotextiles [which are permeable by construction].

OBS

Liquid containment (pond) liners. Undoubtedly the largest single use of geomembranes is in the area of liquid containment. In fact, the name "geomembranes" is actually one that supersedes the name "pond liner," reflecting the original use of the plastic and rubber materials ...

Most vinyl roofing membranes are sealed using hot air, which can be compared to welding metal. The process joins two rolls of membranes at the overlap areas (without using another dissimilar material) to create one monolithic layer that covers the entire roof. The heat-welded, permanently fused seams on vinyl roofing membrane form a watertight seal, and their peel strength can be critical to the roof system’s long-term performance against wind forces.

CONT

ROOF technology allows old roof membrane to be renewed without removal. ROOF technology is based upon a thermochemical treatment of bitumen roof coating. With heat applied to a section of roof coating bitumen and bituminiferous mastics start melting. Imbued with own bitumen, roof coating gains improved waterproofing capabilities. Once cooled such coating becomes a tough monolithic layer, smooth and watertight.

CONT

Hot-applied rubberized asphalts consist of proprietary blends of asphalt, mineral fillers, elastomers(natural, synthetic, or a blend of both), virgin or reclaimed oil and a thermoplastic resin. It is applied hot in such a manner as to form an impermeable monolithic membrane over the surface to be waterproofed, which may be concrete, gypsum board or wood. Improved versions of this type of system consist of two coats of rubberized asphalt with a polyester mat in between, called the fully reinforced or two-ply system.

One only has to mould the membrane into a tube and then incorporate a number of such membrane tubes into a cartridge; liquid can then be recirculated through the cartridge and sufficient pressure for ultra-filtration obtained by restricting the flow downstream of the cartridge. In some systems the membrane may be moulded round a plastic rod which is grooved to produce a thin channel effect; it has been suggested that this is more efficient in reducing concentration polarization than a hollow membrane tube. Electrode which results from the union of an enzyme with an electronic sensor (an ion-selective electrode). The electrode is useful for the assay of organic and inorganic compounds, in a manner as simple as a pH measurement with a glass electrode.

CONT

The earliest enzyme electrodes consisted of an electrochemical sensor, a semipermeable membrane and an intermediate layer containing the enzyme. This system required diffusion of the substrate through the membrane, there to react with the enzyme and so causing production or consumption of a material which was then measured by the electrochemical sensor.... Later enzyme electrodes dispensed with the semipermeable membrane and to attain more rapid response times used enzymes immobilised on easily accessible surfaces of inorganic supports.

OBS

Indirect enzyme electrodes involve the detection of an enzyme reactant by a specific, usually ion-selective electrode. Direct enzyme electrodes incorporate redox enzymes coupled to an electrode with a flow of electrons between the cofactor involved in the enzyme reaction and the electrode.

cell: Basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms. It is a complex collection of molecules with many different activities that are integrated to form a functional unit.

CONT

The use of growing cells in suspension as biocatalysts is generally termed fermentation. Such processes may be distinguished as batch, fed batch or continuous depending on the kinetic relationship between addition of substrate and harvesting of product. Non-growing systems include the use of suspensions, cells retained within a semipermeable membrane, or cells immobilized in or on a solid support. Such immobilized cells may be used in a fixed bed, expanded bed, fluid bed or fully mixed system.... Although many so-called fermentation reactions are carried out under aerobic conditions, these are of little interest in the present context since, when oxygen is used as the terminal electron acceptor, the production of low molecular weight metabolites of the type required is restricted and a high proportion of the carbon in the feedstock is converted into cell biomass.

As a groundwater pollution control mechanism, the use of a liner on the bottom and sides of a landfill has been considered necessary for many years. Weather protection fabrics are usually coated or laminated on just one side(either inside or outside) with a microporous coating or membrane. This garment's new Entrant SC is coated on the inside with a microporous material and also covered on the outside by a revolutionary new, ultra-thin coating that shed water better than any known system. By keeping the honeycomb pores or the inner coating from cogging with water, the breathability of the total fabric system is improved dramatically.

There are four classes of industrially important microorganisms : yeasts, molds, single-cell bacteria and actinomycetes. The yeasts and the molds are more highly developed; together they constitute the fungi. Organisms of this type are eukaryotic, that is, their cells, like the cells of the plants and animals, have a membrane-enclosed nucleus and more than one chromosome; they also contain organelles such as mitochondria.... The single-cell bacteria and the actinomycetes, in contrast, are prokaryotic : they have no nuclear membrane or mitochondria, and they have only one chromosome. In addition the cells of prokaryotes are typically much smaller than those of eukaryotes. In spite of these basic biological differences, there is a superficial resemblance between the molds and the actinomycetes in that both are filamentous : they grow as a branched system of threadlike hyphae rather than as single cells. The yeasts and the bacteria, on the other hand, are unicellular under normal conditions.
