Historically, smelling salts contained ammonium carbonate and perfume; modern preparations typically consist of ammonia dissolved in water and ethanol, sometimes infused with a scented oil, such as eucalyptus. The salts release ammonia gas that irritates the nose and lung membranes, triggering an inhalation reflex, which prompts the muscles that control breathing to work faster and helps restore oxygen flow to the brain and body. 6, record 3, English, - smelling%20salts

Thermo-osmotic energy conversion(TOEC) is an emerging process that efficiently extracts energy from low-grade heat sources. By utilizing a temperature gradient, TOEC induces a partial vapor pressure difference across a hydrophobic membrane. This pressure gradient drives the vapor from the hot feed side through the membrane's pores to the cold permeate side. The movement of water from the hot feed side to the permeate side of the membrane results in excess fluid in the cold reservoir, generating a pressurized flow that can be harnessed to drive a turbine and generate electricity. 1, record 19, English, - thermo%2Dosmotic%20energy%20conversion

Laser lipolysis is a non-invasive form of body sculpting. It removes small fat deposits.... Laser lipolysis can be done in the doctor's office. It takes about half an hour, and you can return to normal activity right away. There is no anesthesia involved. To do the laser "lipo, "your doctor attaches paddle-like applicators to the area to be treated. The paddles emit heat that penetrates your skin and heats up the fat cells underneath. The heat damages the membranes of the fat cells, so they start to die off. Your body then absorbs the dead cells. 2, record 21, English, - laser%20lipolysis

The insecticidal nature of [Bacillus thuringiensis] is attributed to crystal-like proteins that are produced by Bt cells during the spore-forming stage of its life cycle. The crystal protein in Bt kills insects by binding to and disrupting the midgut(stomach) membranes. Susceptible insects will stop feeding within hours of ingesting Bt and will generally die within 2-5 days. The specificity of Bt lies in the fact that particular stomach enzymes(present only in certain insects) must activate the crystal proteins before they are considered toxic. Under normal conditions the crystal protein is insoluble(not active) and is therefore safe to humans, mammals and the majority of insects. 3, record 57, English, - insecticidal%20crystal%20protein

Coated Felts. Some current thinking favours the use of coated organic roofing felts instead of saturated felts for the construction of built-up roofing membranes. In this case, the bitumen required for waterproofing has already been applied in a uniform coating at the manufacturing plant, and application is essentially the sticking together of sufficient layers to give the strength required. The heavier grades of coated felt have been used for many years in this and other countries as a single-layer roofing material on simply pitched roofs of barns and sheds. In more sophisticated roofing systems, several layers of coated felt are used with hot or cold adhesives and a surface protection of gravel or weathering coat of clay-stabilized asphalt emulsion. 2, record 73, English, - coated%20felt

Feutres recouverts d'enduit. 2, record 73, French, - feutre%20enduit

... solute potential. The tendency for water to undergo phase changes or to pass through membranes is controlled by the presence of solutes in the water. This is important in soil for two reasons :(1) evaporation of soil water is an important phase change,(2) water flow from soil into cells of organisms, including plant roots, requires transport through membranes.... As with matric potential, solute potential is never positive; it can be negative for impure water, or approximately zero for very pure water. Solute potential is also called osmotic potential, because the process of passing selectively through a semi-permeable membrane is called osmosis. 4, record 78, English, - osmotic%20potential

2, record 79, French, - peptide%20antimicrobien

Detergent solubilization has been used with great success to study the major proteins in various membranes. Typically, the membranes are first heated to 100°C in a 1% solution of the strong detergent SDS(which disrupts all non-covalent protein-protein and protein-lipid interactions and completely unfolds the proteins), then layered on top of a polyacrylamide gel containing SDS, and lastly subjected to electrophoresis in a strong electric field for several hours. The amount of anionic SDS bound to protein is roughly equal to the mass of the polypeptide, with the result that the negative charge of the detergent overwhelms the intrinsic charge of the protein. Consequently, each individual protein migrates in the electric field at a rate determined by its molecular weight. 4, record 87, English, - sodium%20dodecyl%20sulphate

4, record 87, French, - dod%C3%A9cyl%20sulfate%20de%20sodium

Well-mixed reactors which rely on a selective membrane to separate low molecular weight products from higher molecular weight substrates. They are therefore most useful for carrying out depolymerization reactions, especially when using soluble enzymes, so as to ensure good contact with macromolecular substrates. The main disadvantages associated with the use of these reactors are the small sizes of reactor available, and concentration polarization, that is blockage of the pores in the membrane by solid, fat or colloid particles present in the substrate. 1, record 89, English, - ultrafiltration%20reactor

Production of glucose from cellulose by enzymic methods has been investigated, and a procedure using an enzyme reactor having an ultrafiltration membrane has been reported for this purpose. Cellulose was heated at 200° C in a running porcelain pot mill for 25 min, ground to fine particles with a diameter of 50-150μ, and then suspended in water. The cellulose suspension was reacted with cellulase from Trichoderma viride in an ultrafiltration membrane reactor, and the resulting glucose syrup was continuously removed from the reactor through the membrane. 3, record 89, English, - ultrafiltration%20reactor

1, record 89, French, - r%C3%A9acteur%20%C3%A0%20ultrafiltration

Geomembrane : The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as : synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. These terms are not appropriate because :(i) synthetic, polymeric and plastic are too restrictive;(ii) geomembranes are not always used as liners;(iii) flexible membrane is redundant; and(iv) no material is absolutely impermeable or impervious. In addition, many users for these materials habitually designate them with trade names, which adds to the terminology confusion. Geomembranes should not be confused with other similar membranes used for such applications as single-ply roofing, floating covers and air supported roof. Also, geomembranes should not be confused with geotextiles [which are permeable by construction]. 2, record 91, English, - geomembrane
