MESO-SCALE [5 records]

Subject field(s)
  • Tectonics
CONT

The role and importance of contractional reactivation of former normal faults(tectonic inversion) is now recognized as an important mechanism of intraplate deformation... Despite recent advances in the understanding of the tectonic processes involved in the formation of inversion structures, several aspects of their development and evolution remain unresolved including variability in their 3D shape, their scale variance and the spatial distribution of related macro-and meso-scale structures. It is only by the study of well-exposed inverted sedimentary basins in which subsurface data are available..., that insights can be gained into the outstanding problems associated with tectonic inversion.

CONT

A number of sedimentary basins exist in NW Europe that were affected by tectonic inversion during the Cenozoic ... in response to intraplate compression resulting from the combined effects of Atlantic opening and Alpine collision ...

OBS

tectonic inversion: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

DEF

CONT

The prevailing winds in Sydney area are a combination of synoptic(pressure driven) flows and meso-scale(local) flows. The synoptic conditions are dominated by high pressure systems, moving air in a clockwise direction across Australia, from west to east, with an average period of six to seven days. In summer these high pressure systems are located to the south of Sydney, resulting in onshore synoptic winds. In winter these synoptic pressure systems shift north, following the movement of the sun to the northern hemisphere, resulting in westerly synoptic winds. The winter westerly winds have the greatest number of days when wind speeds exceed 40kph(Linacre, 1997).

CONT

Meso-scale wind flows play an important part in the dispersion of pollutants.... Such flows are most noticeable when skies are clear and when the macro-scale flows(horizontal dimensions of 100s to 1000s of kilometers) are weak.

CONT

Meso-scale wind flows play an important part in the dispersion of pollutants. These flows(horizontal dimension of 10s of kilometers) include :(i) land and sea or lake breezes[;](ii) urban heat-island circulation[;](iii) slope and valley winds. Such flows are most noticeable when skies are clear and when the macro-scale flows(horizontal dimensions of 100s to 1 000s of kilometers) are weak. Characteristically, these meso-scale features have 24-hour cycles(diurnal variations), so that the daily mean vector wind is small and thus, pollution is moved back and forth across the region without much dilution.
