Dans le cadre d'un programme soutenu par l'Union européenne, l'IRD, l'université de Reading (Grande-Bretagne), l'université nationale autonome de Mexico et l'université fédérale du Paranà (Brésil) étudient des procédés biotechnologiques de valorisation de la pulpe de café. Cette partie de la cerise est l'un des principaux résidus de la filière caféicole : une tonne de café produite génère une tonne de pulpe. Riche en protéines, sucres et vitamines, la pulpe pourrait par exemple être utilisée pour l'alimentation animale. Cependant, la reconversion de cette matière première se heurte à plusieurs obstacles.
