A negative sample, meaning the drug is not contained in the urine,... has limitations of interpretation. Since drugs have different clearance rates in urine, it is possible that a negative test could result from not sampling soon enough after drug consumption. It is also possible that the dose of the drug taken was not large enough to result in sufficient quantities of drug metabolites to be detected with the current cut-off levels of the laboratory tests. It could also be that the drugs were not used chronically. Intermittent drug use will result in periods of time where no drug or metabolite is contained in the sample. 3, record 3, English, - negative

1, record 3, French, - n%C3%A9gatif

Secondary metabolites have no recognizable function in the physiology of the producing organism. The antibiotic function, for example, is usually derived from compounds excreted too late in the producing organism's life cycle to confer any ecological advantage. There are, however, a few secondary metabolites which may have some physiological significance to the producing organism. Commercially, the most important secondary metabolites are the antibiotics. Of these, penicillin is produced in the greatest quantity, at a rate of 107 kg per annum. Other important antibiotics produced by fermentation are the aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, polyenes, non-polyene macrolides and the tetracyclines. Toxins and alkaloids account for the remainder of the secondary metabolites of industrial importance. Secondary metabolite is not formed as a direct result of the metabolism that keeps the cells alive. Hence the accumulation of a secondary metabolite in a reactor vessel lags behind the growth of the cells that produce it. 2, record 12, English, - secondary%20metabolite

Regulatory enzymes occupy key positions in metabolic pathways. The structural elements needed to make a regulatory enzyme are used with great selectivity and imposed only on those enzymes with which it will result in the maximum economy of the cell’s resources. An understanding of a particular multienzyme pathway usually suggests which enzymes might make attractive candidates for regulation. For example, many biosynthetic pathways involve a long chain of single chemical steps, each carried out by a discrete enzyme. ... It is obviously most economical for the first enzyme of the pathway to be inhibited once sufficient end product is present. 3, record 15, English, - regulatory%20enzyme

Both mathematical models of the action of a chemostat and experimental studies show that a single-stage chemostat of practical size cannot yield a high concentration of a product and low concentrations of unconsumed raw materials. The inefficiency is particularly great in the synthesis of products such as penicillin, which is a secondary metabolite : it is made by living cells but its synthesis does not arise in the course of the metabolism that keeps the cells alive and growing. It is characteristic of the industrial production of a secondary metabolite that the proliferation of the organism precedes the accumulation of the metabolite by a significant margin. 2, record 29, English, - chemostat

We have post-antibiotic effects with cefotaxime. We may have a bonus from a metabolite effect but all of these things together add up to post-dosing where at the midpoint the serum level crossed the MIC(concentration maximale inhibitrice). 1, record 50, English, - post%2Ddosing

Mixed culture fermentations. It is becoming increasingly clear that the concurrent growth of two or more microbial species can confer advantages and properties not characteristic of monocultures of the constituent organisms. Applications of mixed culture technology can be found in traditional and novel food/feed production, metabolite synthesis, metal recovery and detoxification. 1, record 51, English, - mixed%20culture%20fermentation

1, record 51, French, - fermentation%20en%20culture%20mixte

The conversion of these nitrates to gaseous nitrogen implies a further denitrification stage. There are several possible ways of achieving this :... changing the state of the mixed liquor from aerobiosis to anaerobiosis before clarification, passing it through a shallow lagoon where algae develop, using this form of nitrogen as a metabolite. 1, record 52, English, - denitrification%20stage

1, record 52, French, - stade%20de%20d%C3%A9nitrification
