Laser Metal Deposition(LMD) is a process which uses a laser beam to form a melt pool on a metallic substrate, into which powder is fed. The powder melts to form a deposit that is fusion bonded to the substrate. The required geometry is built up layer by layer. Both the laser and nozzle from which the powder is delivered are manipulated using a gantry system or robotic arm.

Very similar alloys have been developed which excel in related magnetic properties. Take for example, the alloy with terbium and dysprosium commonly known as Terfenol-D ... which exhibits a very high magnetostriction; this alloy is said to have "Giant" Magnetostriction.

... a miniature actuator... utilizes a Terfenol-D rod; only the end of the rod is visible, attached to a metal dome for actuation. The length of the rod changes as current is applied to the coil surrounding it. The housing acts as part of the magnetic circuit, which also includes a conventional permanent magnet for biasing(not visible). Thus, actuation is provided only by the changing length of the rod, although some mechanical amplification(e. g. : using a lever arm) may be advantageous.

Magnetostrictive material, such as these Terfenol-D rods that are several centimeters long, changes its length in a magnetic field. Originally developed for military sonar, the alloy is finding use in actuators, vibration controllers and sensors.

Control-line model airplanes are flown in a circle, attached to a handle by a set of lines. The pilot can control the flight of the model by manipulating the handle. Flying model airplanes on lines has a long and illustrious history. The earliest attempts at "control-line" used one line attached to a long pole. The pilot would cause the airplane to climb or dive by "leading" it with the pole. The person usually credited with inventing the now widely used two line system is Jim Walker, who came up with the idea sometime in the 30s or 40s. The two line system (often referred to a "U-Control", and used on perhaps 99% of control line models) uses a triangular bellcrank to transfer the movement of the wires to the pushrod, connected to the elevator and/or flap control horns. Some Speed flyers use "monoline", which is a system that utilizes line twisting for control.
