Achievements in doctor blade technology have resulted in high quality flexographic printing and pollution prevention through controlled ink transfer from the ink container to the substrate. The average two-roll system with its ink fountain, fountain roller and anilox roll is a veritable open reservoir, exposing large quantities of solvents that are readily evaporated. The chambered doctor blade halts this evaporation. Ink enters the chamber from the reservoir or ink sump by a pump. The ink is held in the manifold area, with a small area exposed to the anilox roll. A doctor blade is positioned to shear off the excess ink as the anilox turns, returning all extra ink to the chamber. A second plastic or metal blade retains the ink within the chamber. The chamber is sealed off completely so that no ink goes beyond the width of the unit.

Detection relies entirely on echoes returned by the main rotor blades which do yield a significant Doppler effect. Experience has shown that rotor blades, whether metal or plastic, behave like mirrors in terms of reflecting electromagnetic radiation. In other words, a blade will only give a usable return to the transmitter location if it is perpendicular to line connecting blade and transmitter. At the receiver, a series of return pulses can be detected, each corresponding to the passage of a blade. By analogy with the illumination of a rotating mirror, this pulsed return pattern is known as "blade flash".

The two halves of the blade can then be joined by a process called "transient liquid phase" bonding, in which the halves are mated around a foil "gasket" of the same alloy as the blade--coated with boron to reduce its melting point--and joined under pressure. The gasket and the thin layer of metal immediately adjacent to it melt, the boron dissipates completely and the part solidifies while still under pressure. As far as can be ascertained, the join produced by this means in a single-crystal blade is effectively perfect.
