When an ionizing particle enters the device, it collides with gas atoms and strikes electrons from their orbit around the nucleus of the gas atoms. In addition, an ionizing particle striking the outside of the tube can also knock electrons off the metal casing. In either case, these free electrons then are attracted to the positively charged central wire, gaining energy by the attraction. As they approach the wire they knock electrons off other atoms, creating an avalanche or cascade effect which results in a pulse of current large enough to be detected. A "quenching gas" is usually added to the filler gas so that these avalanches will dissipate over time and not continue indefinitely, which would cause inaccuracy or electronic failure. 1, record 15, English, - quenching%20gas

A cavesson resembles a heavy, well fitting halter and is the preferred headpiece for longeing (lungeing) English horses. "Breaking" cavessons are generally made of stout leather with heavy metal nosepieces and have straps to fasten them securely and keep them in position because during "breaking" it is often necessary to tug or pull quite hard on the line to control the horse. Lighter, simpler cavessons are also available for the very young horse, the already-trained horse, for use with a bit or bridle, and for use as a dropped noseband. 4, record 23, English, - caveson%20bridle

The traditional cavesson is made from leather but nylon cavessons are also available. A longeing(lungeing) cavesson has a padded noseband with a jointed metal nosepiece that usually has 3 swivel-mounted rings attached to it. Generally the middle ring is used for longeing(lungeing) unless a horse carries his head to the outside of the circle extremely. In that case, the inside cavesson ring can be used to bend the horse inward on the longeing(lungeing) circle. Readying the electrotype shell. The metal layer deposited on the mould is called a shell and is 2/10 to 4/10 of a mm in thickness(8/1000 to 16/1000 of an inch)... The thickness is in function of the amount of time given to the process of electrolysis. Once the desired thickness is achieved the shell must be detached from the mould. This is not always an easy matter. If the mould is made of wax it can be removed with boiling water... Plastic moulds are removed by pulling them off, and lead moulds must be cut away along the edges. Shells are fragile and as they are not rigid they are sometimes damaged when being removed from the mould. In any case, shells must be backed to make them hard enough to print with. Backing is usually done by pouring a molten alloy made of lead(97%) and antimony(3%) onto the back of the shell. 2, record 34, English, - electrotype%20shell

Metal dog tags bearing a soldier's name, rank and serial number for identification in case of death date to the early part of the century, when battles were still being fought with bullets and bayonets. But combatants in today's wars are not just killed, they are sometimes obliterated, dog tags and all. So the U. S. Army began collecting blood and tissue samples from new recruits, part of an ambitious "genetic dog tag" program that will eventually allow pathologists to identify the smallest tissue specimens by cross-matching to genetic samples stored on file. The Pentagon aims to collect specimens from all 2 million active service members by the year 2000. 1, record 54, English, - DNA%20dog%20tag

Fabric-reinforced earth walls. Similar to the previous case histories involving continuous sheets of fabric to construct earth walls and earth dams, the use of narrow fabric strips provides reinforcement in the same manner. This scheme then duplicates the use of metal strips in conventional reinforced earth walls. In addition to lower cost, the fabric strips have the additional advantages of being noncorrosive under almost any environmental situation and of developing full friction between the strips and the sol. 1, record 57, English, - fabric%2Dreinforced%20earth%20wall
