OBS

Manganese. This drier, sold normally in strengths of 6, 9, or 12 percent metal, is what is known as a through drier, acting on both the top and the bottom of the film. Mainly, however, it is an oxidation rather than a polymerization catalyst and can therefore cause wrinkling if employed in excessive amounts.

The cobalt drier, sold containing 6 or 12 percent cobalt as metal, is the most powerful drier used by coatings industry. It acts as an oxidation catalyst and is known as a top drier, drying the top of the film. Excessive amounts of cobalt drier will set up stresses and strains in the paint film that can result in wrinkling. Though purple in color, cobalt has low tinting strength and will not discolor a paint.

OBS

cobalt drier: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

Ammonium molybdate is... a representative soluble molybdenum compound. Molybdenum is an essential element for the function of nitrogenase in plants and as a cofactor for enzymes including xanthine oxidoreductase, aldehyde oxidase, and sulfide oxidase in animals.(NH4) 6Mo7O24 is the form of ammonium molybdate frequently sold because it is easily prepared at high purity by crystallization from aqueous solutions of MoO3 containing excess NH3.... AM is used for preparing specialty catalysts and wherever a highly aqueous soluble form of molybdate, free of metal cations, is required. AM is also used as an analytical reagent and as a catalyst for dehydrogenation and desulfurization in petroleum and coal technology...

Zirconium-Titanium Phosphate Acid Catalysts Synthesized by Sol Gel Techniques.... A method for preventing the condensation of the crystal structure during exposure to high temperatures was to use H2SO4 along with phosphoric acid as a gelling agent either during initial synthesis or by dissolving the amorphous phosphate in sulfuric acid later. Sulfonation created a solution of metal phosphates and metal sulfates in our catalyst that increased the proportion of amorphous to crystalline regions in the material even after treatment at high temperatures.

CONT

Organometallic complex catalysts tend to be highly active, specific, and selective, and may resist poisoning better than heterogeneous systems. The catalytic center may have two metal sites. Organometallic catalysts have a central transition-metal atom or ion bonded to molecules known as ligands which form a polyhedron around the metal. The nature of the metal and ligands critically influences the electronic structure of the complex. The coordination bonding properties of the metal are a key feature of the catalytic complexes. Important reactions of catalyst complexes are ligand exchange, oxidative addition, and the insertion reaction.

The action of the metallic catalyst has for many years been related to the geometric spacing and arrangement of the metal atoms with respect to the molecules of the reactants. Thus, for example, Beeck found that a plot of the spacing of the atoms of pure metal films against the activity of these films for the hydrogenation of ethylene yielded a curve with a maximum corresponding to activities larger by several orders of magnitude than the activity of some metals lower on the curve. Thus, a thin film of rhodium was, per unit area at a given temperature, about 1000 times as active as a thin film of nickel.
