The single reed for the clarinet is made from a slip cut from the stem of "A. donax. "After being trimmed, the reed is flattened on the inner side, while the end of the rounded outer side is scraped down to a feather edge. The thick end of the reed is attached, flat side down, to the mouthpiece by a metal ligature or length of twine. In playing, the thin end of the reed vibrates, alternately closing and opening the space between the reed and the mouthpiece. The vibration carries through the wedged-shaped tone chamber in the mouthpiece and into the air column in the tube.

Achievements in doctor blade technology have resulted in high quality flexographic printing and pollution prevention through controlled ink transfer from the ink container to the substrate. The average two-roll system with its ink fountain, fountain roller and anilox roll is a veritable open reservoir, exposing large quantities of solvents that are readily evaporated. The chambered doctor blade halts this evaporation. Ink enters the chamber from the reservoir or ink sump by a pump. The ink is held in the manifold area, with a small area exposed to the anilox roll. A doctor blade is positioned to shear off the excess ink as the anilox turns, returning all extra ink to the chamber. A second plastic or metal blade retains the ink within the chamber. The chamber is sealed off completely so that no ink goes beyond the width of the unit.

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. In the heat of a fire, however, the air within the chamber expands faster than it can escape through the metering hole. This expansion causes the pressure within the chamber to increase, forcing the metal diaphragm against contact points in the alarm circuit. An alarm signal to the system control unit results. This type of detector is most often combined in one unit that also has fixed-temperature capability.

Advanced Gradient Heating Facility(AGHF)... The AGHF supports the production of advanced semiconductor materials and alloys using the directional solidification process, which depends on establishing a hot side and a cold side in the sample(a temperature gradient). It provides an extremely stable temperature environment of up to 1, 400°C, high-temperature gradients of up to 100°C/cm in the solidification zone, slow movement of the gradient across a sample to provide slow growth rates, efficient cooling through the use of a liquid metal cooling ring attached to the sample container, and Peltier pulse marking capability. The AGHF consists of three modules mounted in one side of a Spacelab double rack : the Core Facility Module contains the processing chamber with the furnace inside; the Electronics Module contains the controls and equipment necessary to operate the furnace; and the Gas Storage Module contains argon for chamber repressurization and sample cooling.

A genre of music typified by moderate to slow measures punctuated by fast measures, heavily distorted guitars, double-bass drums, and deep, hoarse vocals made to sound as though they come from the very mouth of Satan. The lyrics normally concern death, decay, accepting Satan as a personal saviour, and, among intellectual bands such as Skin Chamber, existential emptiness. Death metal appears to have evolved from speed metal such as Slayer early Metallica, as well as from such straightforward metal bands as Mötorhead and Black Sabbath. The style of the vocals in death metal seems to be in part a rebellion against the wailing high-pitch vocals of glam metal bands in the tradition of Led Zeppelin and Guns ’n’ Roses. Examples of death metal bands : Cannibal Corpse, Godflesh, and some Sepultura.

Perforated-Sleeve Type. The perforated-sleeve vaporizing burner has a metal base with concentric grooves. Each groove is enclosed by two cylindrical perforated-metal sleeves, which form a combustion chamber above each groove. At the start of operations, oil flows into the grooves and saturates strips of asbestos set on edge in the grooves. For ignition, the sleeves are momentarily tilted aside, and then a lighted match is applied to the asbestos wicks. The resulting flame eventually extends above the tops of the sleeves. This type of burner is used in kitchen ranges, space heaters, and small boilers.
