This dip meter measures both the amount and direction of dip by readings taken in the borehole, and can be operated by using either self-potential or resistivity measurements. The instrument has a long cylindrical body in two parts, the lower part moving telescopically into the upper. Three long springy metal strips, arranged symmetrically round the body, have their upper and lower ends attached to the upper and lower parts of the body respectively. These springs press outwards and make contact with the walls of the hole. 1, record 13, English, - Schlumberger%20dip%20meter

Aging is a phenomenon that describes the change in contaminant bioavailability to soil-dwelling organisms with an increase in soil contact time.... Aging is usually a two-phase process; an early rapid sorption stage(e. g., to clay, soil humic acid, soil-derived metal oxides, etc.) followed by slower reaction processes(e. g., adsorption on condensed organic matter, diffusion into nano-pores, encapsulation). 1, record 15, English, - aging

Contact Period in the Champlain Valley(1609-1664 AD)... 1609 the Mahican living in the Hudson Valley came in contact with Dutch explorer Henry Hudson. Shortly thereafter, the Dutch began to trade metal tools to the Mahican in exchange for furs. The Mahican also developed alliances with the French. When the English captured New Amsterdam in 1664, a region which included much of the Mahican's traditional territory, the Mahican were forced to develop alliances with the British. By 1700 the Mahican population had been decreased from an estimated 4, 000 to about 500 through European diseases, famine, wars, and political pressures. Many of the Mahican merged with other groups, including the Dutch, the Western Abenaki, the French, and the Mohawk Iroquois. By 1720 the Mahican no longer existed as an organized native tribe in the Champlain and Hudson Valleys. The influx of Europeans to the Northeast caused great upheaval among the region's Native American populations. Disease, confusing political and economic relations, and continuous warfare split native communities apart and forced them to join outlying groups.... 2, record 25, English, - contact%20period

When two electrical conductors are connected, an electrical resistance forms at the transition point between the two conductors. This resistance depends on the contact size and state of the surface. Since surfaces are never flat in microscopic measure, contact only takes place at the highest point. If one considers that the contact point is made by conductor metal on conductor metal, it is valid, as for all resistance, that the value is determined by specific resistance, the surface through which the current rate flows and the height of the "contact peaks. "The greater the amount of contact point surfaces there are, the lower the resulting resistance and consequently the greater is the capacity which the contact points can transmit. The conductors must be firmly pressed together so that the distance, the height of the "contact peaks" is as small as possible and the contact area as large as possible. 2, record 29, English, - transition%20resistance

Up to now, welding two different metals such as steel and aluminum has been a difficult task. Mazda tackles it by optimizing the rotating tool shape and joining characteristics, and by using galvanized steel on one side. A joining gun holds the parts from both sides, and then spins while force is applied. This generates frictional heat that subsequently joins the aluminum materials to the steel sheet metal. Galvanized steel helps prevent the galvanic corrosion that results from the contact of two different types of metal. 1, record 40, English, - joining%20gun

1, record 40, French, - t%C3%AAte%20de%20soudage%20cylindrique

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. In the heat of a fire, however, the air within the chamber expands faster than it can escape through the metering hole. This expansion causes the pressure within the chamber to increase, forcing the metal diaphragm against contact points in the alarm circuit. An alarm signal to the system control unit results. This type of detector is most often combined in one unit that also has fixed-temperature capability. 1, record 41, English, - pneumatic%20rate%2Dof%2Drise%20spot%20detector

1, record 41, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20ponctuel%20thermov%C3%A9locim%C3%A9trique%20pneumatique

Mercury probes are precision instruments that enable rapid, convenient, and non-destructive measurements of semiconductor samples by probing wafers with mercury to form contacts of well-defined area. The probes may be connected to C-V plotters, curve tracers, or doping profilers for a variety of measurements. Mercury probes eliminate time consuming metallizations and their convenience make them tools for production process monitoring applications. Mercury probes either contact wafers with a single circular mercury dot contact on the front surface and a large area metal disk for low resistance back contact, or they contact semiconductor wafers with concentric dot and ring mercury electrodes as well as a backside contact. 1, record 48, English, - mercury%20probe

The unique results achieved with supercalendering are due to the intermediate fibrous rolls(sometimes referred to as bowls or filled rolls) which possess elastic or plastic properties. With the application of load on the nips, the metal rolls cause a depression or deformation on the fibrous rolls at the point of contact, and the deformation spreads out on either side of the nip(Figure 18-28). When rotated, this spread area will creep because of the constant effort of the material to return to its normal shape. This flow causes a relative motion of the filled roll surface against the metal roll surface, thus producing rolling friction, which helps to give the polishing and smoothing effects. The intensity of action is governed by the amount of plastic flow and by the nip contact pressure. 2, record 83, English, - filled%20roll

The sensing element is made of two dissimilar metals welded together so that they become one piece. The two metals have different expansion rates and this causes the two metals to bend when heated. As the bimetal element is heated by the pilot flame, a movable contact is pushed toward a stationary contact. When these contacts touch, an electrical circuit is completed through them. Nitruration gazeuse. 1, record 93, French, - nitruration%20gazeuse

Silver introduced into the water by electrolysis has an antiseptic action which, to be really effective, requires a very long contact time and high doses which are not well tolerated by the human body. Organic substances present in the water passivate the metal and reduce its effectiveness still more. Silver is practically inactive in relation to bacteriophages, bacilli spores, algae and fungi, which cause skin diseases.
