A reed or blade of other material that serves as the sounding apparatus of certain wind instruments.

The single reed for the clarinet is made from a slip cut from the stem of "A. donax. "After being trimmed, the reed is flattened on the inner side, while the end of the rounded outer side is scraped down to a feather edge. In playing, the thin end of the reed vibrates, alternately closing and opening the space between the reed and the mouthpiece. A method of engraving in which the design is bitten into the plate with acid.

The plate is first covered with an acid-resistant resinous substance. The artist then takes a finely pointed needle and draws the design out of this resinous ground. The drawing instrument does not cut into the metal surface. The image which will print is represented by the areas in which the copper of the plate has been exposed. The plate is then immersed in an acid bath. The acid eats into the plate only in those areas not protected by the ground. The length of time the plate remains in the acid bath determines the depth of the etched lines.

Resin transfer molding(RTM)... uses a closed mold, in two or more parts, usually made of glass-reinforced polymers or light metal alloys, with injection points and vents to allow air to escape. Reinforcement is cut to shape and placed in the mold, together with any inserts or fittings. Strontium was discovered in 1790 and was isolated in 1808. Strontium is a soft, shiny metal. Like calcium and the other metals on the left-hand side of the periodic table, strontium is an active metal. It has a shiny, silver-gray appearance when it is first cut, but soon tarnishes with a duller, slightly yellow colour. The pure metal cannot be found in nature, but an abundant supply of compounds have been naturally formed by reactions between strontium, atmospheric gases and water. Its compounds comprise of 0. 025% of the earth's crust, putting it in the same category as carbon and sulfur.

Readying the electrotype shell. The metal layer deposited on the mould is called a shell and is 2/10 to 4/10 of a mm in thickness(8/1000 to 16/1000 of an inch)... The thickness is in function of the amount of time given to the process of electrolysis. Once the desired thickness is achieved the shell must be detached from the mould. This is not always an easy matter. If the mould is made of wax it can be removed with boiling water... Plastic moulds are removed by pulling them off, and lead moulds must be cut away along the edges. Shells are fragile and as they are not rigid they are sometimes damaged when being removed from the mould. In any case, shells must be backed to make them hard enough to print with. Backing is usually done by pouring a molten alloy made of lead(97%) and antimony(3%) onto the back of the shell.

With a computer and a laser printer anyone can be a publisher. Now, with only slightly more sophisticated technology, they can be a manufacturer too. The process of 3-D printing, invented at MIT by Emanuel Sachs and Michael Cima, can pass from computer-aided design straight to manufacture(though more conventional machine tools can also do this if a part is merely to be cut from a block of metal). And it can cope with parts that have complicated geometries, with cavities and cooling channels-difficult trick to manage with traditional manufacturing techniques.

A few parts of the house deserve particular attention... around doors and windows... where the wood-frame wall meets the masonry... around doors into unheated attic... There is an easy way to tell whether or not any of the above areas need work.... make yourself a draft gauge. All you need is a metal clothes hanger, a plastic sandwich bag(or a piece of light tissue paper), a pair of scissors and two clothes pins. Cut the sandwich bag down each side and wrap one end over the cross-bar of the clothes hanger. Use the clothes pins to fasten the bag to the bar. Check for drafts, on a cold day, in all suspected areas. Hold the gauge steady by the handle of the hanger with the plastic bag close to the suspected areas. If any breeze is coming in, the movement of the plastic will show you where.
