Flashing should be installed as roofing progresses to prevent water damage to insulation or deck under the roofing. If this is not possible, water stops must be installed and completely removed prior to continuation. Metal counterflashing must be installed as flashing progresses. The basic Koppers flashings require the use of metal counterflashing. When using throughwall counterflashing, it is recommended that the designer specify two piece counterflashing to facilitate ease of flashing installation, maintenance and repair. Metal counterflashing is to have not less than a four(4) inch(102 mm) exposed apron extending down over the base flashing.

In conventional roofs splits often follow insulation joints or originate at a point of weakness such as a corner or roof penetration or at joints in metal flashing to which the membrane is bonded. The asphalt/bitumen flood coat must impregnate the entire polyester fleece material, only the top fleece surface needs to be flood coated. The protected roof membrane is then given a glaze coat of asphalt and insulation, slip sheet and ballast are installed and placed on the roof.

Metal coping is often used to cover the top of a parapet wall in lieu of masonry copings. If your composition flashing system is the full height of the parapet wall, extend this flashing over the top to the outside edge of the parapet. This will ensure no interior leaks should water enter at the metal coping joints.

Flashings are used to make watertight any roof area where the roof membrane terminates, is interrupted, or intersects an area or projection having a marked change in slope or direction... Flashings are generally divided into two categories : base flashings and counterflashings. Base flashings are, in a sense, a continuation of the membrane, turned up onto a surface that is in a different plane from the field of the roof, and installed as a separate operation. They are usually fabricated using a nonmetallic material, such as an asphalt-coated felt. Counterflashings, or cap flashings, can be of metal, coated felt, or other materials. They shield and seal the exposed edges of the base flashing. The combined use of non-metallic materials for base flashings and metal for counterflashings brings out the best in each material. Bituminous base flashing materials have the same coefficient of expansion and contraction as the roof membrane, and they work together as a unit. They are the only type of material acceptable for use in constructing base flashings.

Skylights, chimneys, and roof hatches. Rectangular penetrations can be handled with sheet metal flashings in some cases, and with "preformed" curb flashings in others... The base flashing is rigidly connected to the roof panel with washered screws... The upslope side of a rectangular penetration is a bit more difficult. The panel itself must end a sufficient distance from the penetration to allow room for a cricket, of diverter, to direct the flow of water around the penetration. This cricket flashing must be inserted beneath the upslope panel and sealed to it with butyl tape.
