METAL GRID [6 records]

Record 1 2017-03-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Painting (Arts)
  • Installations and Equipment (Museums and Heritage)
  • Restoration of Works of Art (Museums and Heritage)
DEF

A system of wooden or metal bars running horizontally and vertically in a grid pattern across the back of an artwork painted on a wood panel.

OBS

Cradles [are] meant to prevent warping without restricting the natural expansion and contraction of the panel in response to changes in relative humidity.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Peinture (Arts)
  • Aménagement et équipements (Muséologie et Patrimoine)
  • Restauration d'œuvres d'art (Muséologie et Patrimoine)
DEF

Record 2 2014-04-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Thread Spinning (Textiles)
  • Tools and Equipment (Textile Industries)
  • Cotton Industry
CONT

The beater is enclosed in a conical casing... Between the top and bottom sections of the conical casing, may be perforated sheet metal or a series of closely spaced grid bars.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Filature (Textiles)
  • Outillage et équipement (Industries du textile)
  • Industrie cotonnière
CONT

Record 3 2009-05-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Semiconductors (Electronics)
  • Photoelectricity and Electron Optics
  • Solar Energy
DEF

[A solar cell part used] for conducting solar photon-generated currents from the surface of the cell.

CONT

Collector grids have conventionally been metallic grids that can obscure the solar cell, resulting in a loss of efficiency. To reduce obscuration, some known solar cells use a transparent conductive coating (TCC), such as gallium nitride (GaN), as the collector grid.

OBS

grid : The fine "finger" structure made of metal on the front side of the solar cell that serves as an n-contact.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Semi-conducteurs (Électronique)
  • Photo-électricité et optique électronique
  • Énergie solaire
DEF

Record 4 2008-08-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electrical Power Supply
DEF

The voltage between the energized object and the feet of a person in contact with the object.

OBS

It is equal to the difference in voltage between the object (which is at a distance of 0 feet) and a point some distance away.

CONT

Because of the voltage gradient, the voltage of the earth only a short distance from the grounded metallic equipment will be different than the equipment. Thus, if a worker touches the grounded equipment, his or her feet will be at a different potential than his or her hands. This voltage can be lethal. Touch voltage is mitigated by increasing the number of grounding electrodes, increasing bonding between metal parts, and employing a grounding grid.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Alimentation (Distribution électrique)
DEF

Record 5 2006-05-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fences and Enclosures
  • Protection of Farm Animals
CONT

Cattle guards are horizontal steel rails placed at fence openings on highways to prevent cattle from crossing.

CONT

When farmers and ranchers wish to keep livestock from exiting a fenced pasture via an entrance road, they can either install an inconvenient gate or a "cattle guard. "The latter is a grid of metal bars bridging a shallow pit. Cattle cannot cross because their feet would slip between the bars.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Enceintes et clôtures
  • Protection des animaux (Agric.)
OBS

Des casse-pattes.

OBS

Record 6 1986-11-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Archaeology
  • Photography
OBS

in underwater archaeology

CONT

Bass and Throckmorton were the first to use the grid system... on a Byzantine shipwreck located... at Yassi Ada, Turkey, in 1961.... they spent the first month constructing a scaffolding of angle iron over the whole area, stepped to accommodate the slope of the bottom, with squares spaced 2 meters apart, each leveled horizontally. Two portable photographic towers of light metal... could then be bolted to each grid. A camera mounted on the tower took photographs from the same elevation and angle,....(MADIG, 1975, p. 156).

  • Archéologie

CONT

(MASCI, 1973, p. 744).
