«La chalcopyrite», CuFeS2, quadratique, est le minerai le plus important et le plus répandu du cuivre. [...] Sa couleur est jaune de laiton, mais la chalcopyrite s'oxyde et s'hydrate à l'air et ses surfaces prennent alors des tons irisés rouges et bleus. L'éclat est métallique. Elle diffère de la pyrite par sa faible dureté (3,5 à 4) et ne peut se confondre avec l'or en raison de sa grande fragilité.

La chalcopyrite [...] cristallise sous un grand nombre de formes appartenant au système quadratique. Ces variétés sont souvent irisées à la surface.
