METASOMATIC FLUID [4 records]

Record 1 2004-08-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geochemistry
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
  • Metals Mining
CONT

Metasomatism is initiated by the separation of a magmatic-hydrothermal fluid released by crystallization and hydrofracturing of the pluton, which may combine with metamorphic waters to transport base metal cations and sulphur. Metasomatic fluids pass along pluton and dyke contacts, stratigraphic contacts, fractures and other permeable pathways and infiltrate the surrounding wall rocks.

Domaine(s)
  • Géochimie
  • Érosion et corrosion (Géologie)
  • Mines métalliques
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Metals Mining
  • Economic Geology
  • Geochemistry
CONT

Metasomatic deposits... commonly are superimposed on older rocks of the intrusive complex by continuing igneous activity or fluid transport of elements of economic interest(among other) ;may be crosscutting with respect to intrusive units; and commonly have associated alteration which may be a guide to ore.

CONT

Metasomatic deposits ... occur in alkalic igneous rocks or surrounding country rocks, with mineralization superimposed on pre-existing rocks. The principal commodities recoverable from deposits of this type are niobium, tantalum, beryllium, yttrium, rare earths, gallium, uranium, thorium, and zirconium. Normally only one or two commodities carry the deposit economically, with others if recovered, as byproducts. The principal Canadian example is the Highwood Resources deposit at Thor Lake, NWT ...

CONT

... metasomatic deposits form by the reaction of fluids released during crystallization with pre-existing carbonatite or country rocks.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mines métalliques
  • Géologie économique
  • Géochimie
CONT

Record 4 1990-10-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
  • Petrography
  • Vulcanology and Seismology
CONT

Contact metasomatic deposits. During the crystallization of certain magmas a considerable amount of fluid escapes. This fluid may produce widespread changes near the contacts of magma with the surrounding rocks. Where such changes are caused by heat effects, without addition of material from the magma, the resulting deposits are called contact metamorphic. If appreciable material is contributed by the magma, the deposits are termed contact metasomatic.

OBS

contact-metasomatic: Said of a rock or mineral that has originated through the process of contact metasomatism.

CONT

Iron-rich skarn deposits ... belong to two main subtypes: (1) those referred to as contact metasomatic or replacement deposits that developed along the margins of igneous intrusions in association with limestone, dolomite, argillaceous sediments and mafic volcanic rocks; and (2) skarns of a stratiform type ....

Domaine(s)
  • Minéralogie
  • Pétrographie
  • Volcanologie et sismologie
CONT

phlogopite : (...) Mica fréquent des gîtes métasomatiques de contact avec la calcite, ainsi que dans les pegmatites et dans les roches ignées riches en magnésium et pauvres en fer.
