DEF

A nonspecific sign of various bone diseases such as Ewing's sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, metastatic carcinoma, syphilis, chronic osteomyelitis, and chronic hemolytic anemia. The sign consists of short or long, fine or coarse periosteal spicules which are perpendicular to the cortex. They may be few in number or form a well developed palisade.

Domaine(s)
  • Radiographie (Médecine)
  • Appareil locomoteur (Médecine)
DEF

Also indicated as adjuvant therapy, in combination with 5-fluorouracil, in patients with completely resected Dukes’ stage C colon cancer. Evidence of metastatic disease must be excluded before initiating therapy. In patients with Dukes’ stage C carcinoma of the colon. Children : Also recommended for use in high-dose steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome in children : As adjuvant therapy following relapse on corticosteroids such as prednisone; or as an alternative to the use of an alkylating agent or cyclosporin. Agent immunomodulateur présenté sous forme de comprimé.

OBS

CONT

Sweat gland adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy with high metastatic potential seen more commonly in later years of life. Scalp is the most common site of occurrence and it usually spreads to lymph nodes. Liver, lung and bones are the distant sites of metastasis with fatal results. The differentiation between apocrine and eccrine metastatic sweat gland carcinoma is often difficult.

DEF

A round, lucent calvarial defect with a normal bony density (sequestrum) in its center. [From EISER, 1984, p. 311.]

OBS

The term was first used to describe an unusual radiographic manifestation of eosinophilic granuloma. Although most commonly seen in that disorder, this radiographic appearance has also been described in infectious osteitis(tuberculosis), metastatic carcinoma, radiation necrosis, meningioma, dermoid cyst, and benign bone tumors. [From EISER, 1984, p. 311. ]

DEF

DEF

A vertebra in which one pedicle is destroyed and one pedicle is intact, as seen in metastases of the spine. [From GBONE 1980, p. 411.]

OBS

The destruction or integrity of one or both pedicles of a vertebral body is a radiographic finding used to differentiate multiple myeloma from osteolytic metastases. It is referred to as the pedicle sign. Because myeloma primarily involves the red marrow, it frequently causes destruction of the vertebral bodies. Involvement of the vertebral pedicles, which lack red marrow, is much less frequent. Thus, isolated destruction of a pedicle without vertebral body involvement strongly suggests the diagnosis of metastatic carcinoma. [From EISER, 1984, p. 360. ]

DEF
