Environment Canada developed a Severe Thunderstorm Watch/Warning Program across Canada to ensure the safety and well-being of all Canadians. The purpose of this program is to deliver Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Watch/Warning Bulletins. These bulletins are designed to provide as much advance warning as possible of hazardous thunderstorm activity and tornadoes. In addition to a continuous surveillance system(e. g., satellite or meteorological radar coverage), the Program relies on weather observations provided by volunteer weather watchers.

DCP: Data Collection Platforms are automatic or semi-automatic or semi-automatic in situ environmental observing systems.

The Meteosat Data Collection System is the regional system for the Meteosat coverage areas. 33 regional telecommunications channels are used to relay environmental data to the PGS in Fucino. Selected data are then retransmitted back through Meteosat over the DCP Retransmission System(DRS). In addition, the PGS transmits the data to the Mission Control Centre(MCC) in Darmstadt for further processing and distribution. The data of interest to the programmes of the World Meteorological Organization(WMO) are transmitted over the Global Telecommunications System(GTS), while a variety of other distribution systems are also used.
