In 2011, AAFC [Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada]-STB [Science and Technology Branch of the National Agroclimate Information Service] built an in-situ sensor network where soil moisture and meteorological data are collected in agricultural landscapes within Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan over a total of 18 stations. To meet the objectives of various research projects, the RISMA system was designed to provide near-real time soil moisture and meteorological data. The field data is transmitted to an AAFC server on a timely basis. A Web segment of the sensor system is to be developed to enable data sharing based on Open Geospatial Consortium(OGC) standards and it can be divided into two sections : 1) transferring the data from AAFC server to a Web server based on interoperable protocols, and 2) data visualization and distribution by serving the data to the public on a Web-based platform.

A low sun has feeble burning power so the number of possible hours of "bright sunshine" is less than the number of hours of "visible sunshine", the sunshine unit used in the United States

The Branch was formed in 1971, originally to study the chemistry and physics of the atmosphere as it pertains to acid rain, but now the staff, the largest group of atmospheric specialists in Canada, studies a variety of atmospheric pollution problems.

The eastern Canada data are further prorated on a grid array of 127 km x 127 km squares, which is the basic dimension for the emissions and meteorological data used in the Atmospheric Environment Service long-range transport model. Total emissions(point and area) of SO2 and NOx, for each of the grids in eastern Canada, are listed in Appendix 2.
