A non-destructive testing device that locates steel in concrete up to a distance of about 70 mm from the surface.

The reinforcing steel in parking garage decks should be protected with a 50 mm thick concrete cover, a minimum requirement which is unfortunately seldom met.... The thickness of the concrete over the steel can be measured with a cover meter, also known as pachometer. Several types are available. The accuracy is in the range of + mm for a cover less than 25 mm.

ME2i utilise une méthode magnétique pour la recherche, l'implantation et la détermination des dimensions de ferraillage dans les bétons. L'appareil utilisé est appelé pachomètre ou profomètre. Il est constitué de la manière suivante : au milieu une bobine générant un champ magnétique; symétriquement deux bobines à environ 5 centimètres; symétriquement deux bobines à une douzaine de centimètres. La bobine centrale reçoit pendant un court instant un courant et émet un champ magnétique qui aimante les fers à béton. Les bobines latérales reçoivent le champ magnétique. Si le champ magnétique est identique sur les bobines de gauche et de droite, cela signifie que l'appareil est au droit d'un fer. Il émet alors un signal. L'intensité du champ dépend de la profondeur du fer et de son diamètre. La dérivée du champ dépend de sa profondeur. Au moyen d'un microprocesseur incorporé, l'appareil calcule le diamètre et la profondeur du fer. Lorsqu'il n'existe qu'une seule nappe de fers à béton, la méthode est très efficace. Elle l'est moins au croisement de deux nappes et lorsque deux nappes de ferraillage se superposent.
