DEF

An electrically conducting or semi-conducting nanofibre.

CONT

Two processes in nanotechnology by which nanowires can be manufactured are suspension and deposition. A suspended nanowire is held up by the ends in an evacuated chamber, and then is chemically etched or bombarded with high-speed atoms or molecules to reduce its diameter. Another method involves indenting the surface of a wire in the center of a suspended span, raising the temperature, and then stretching the wire while it is near its melting point. A deposited nanowire is fabricated on a surface consisting of some non-conducting substance such as plastic or glass. The process is similar to that by which semiconductor chips are grown, except that the result is a linear (one-dimensional) structure rather than a flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional) structure.

CONT

A nanometer-scale wire [is] made of metal atoms, silicon, or other materials that conduct electricity. Nanowires are built atom by atom on a solid surface, often as part of a microfluidic device. They can be coated with molecules such as antibodies that will bind to proteins and other substances of interest to researchers and clinicians. By the very nature of their nanoscale size, nanowires are incredibly sensitive to such binding events and respond by altering the electrical current flowing through them, and thus can form the basis of ultra sensitive molecular detectors.

OBS

[It is an] extremely thin wire with a diameter on the order of a few nanometers(nm) or less, where 1 nm=10-9 meter.

OBS

nanowire: term and definition standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

DEF

Nanofibre électriquement conductrice ou semi-conductrice.

CONT

CONT

The Water Department utilizes an electronic outside reading device to conveniently read water meters, without the need to interrupt residents or enter their homes. The outside reading device(ARB) is a small black rectangular box that is attached to a certain location on the exterior of the building.... The ARB is electronically connected by a wire to the inside water meter. A special reading gun is used by the meter readers to read the inside meter, without the need to enter the home/business. The reading gun is inserted into the ARB and is given the water consumption reading electronically.... Having the outside "automatic reading box(ARB) accessible at all times to meter reading personnel is vital. This allows the Water Department to bill you based on an actual reading, not an estimated reading.

OBS

The black box on the outside wall of your home allows our meter reader to read your meter electronically.

CONT

Edouard Branly [is a] French physicist and inventor of the coheror employed in wireless telegraphy...

CONT

It consists in a glass tube filled with metal filings which acts as an insulator when placed in a circuit comprising a battery and a galvanometer. However, if an electric spark is created some distance away, it becomes a conductor and lets the current pass into the circuit. When the tube is tapped lightly it becomes an insulator again and interrupts the current.

CONT

Next to the rock, the boy held a two and a half meter long pole, along which ran a metallic wire, probably connected to a Branly coherer, a battery, and a bell.

DEF

Premier détecteur d'ondes hertziennes, inventé par Branly.

CONT
