METERING ORIFICE [7 records]

Record 1 2010-04-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fire-Fighting and Rescue Equipment
  • Extinguishing Agents
DEF

A type of foam concentrate proportioning system in which a pump and appropriate devices feed the concentrate to a metering orifice or controller at the same pressure as that of the water supply.

CONT

Balanced pressure proportioner: The use of a separate pump for transporting and pressurizing foam concentrate to be delivered in the correct proportions to a flowing water stream offers the greatest advantage for reliable and accurate operation of a foam concentrate proportioning system which must function at varying rates of volume or pressure during its use. ... The balanced pressure system ... relies on: (1) a hydraulically monitored pressure control valve in a bypass foam concentrate line from a pump, and (2) a correctly sized venturi-type proportioning controller in the water line for correct and automatic proportioning over wide ranges of flow.

CONT

Balanced-pressure proportioners and around-the-pump proportioners are both systems that are built into the apparatus fire pump. Apparatus equipped with a balanced-pressure proportioner have a foam concentration line connected to each discharge outlets. This line is supplied by a foam concentrate pump separate from the main fire pump. The foam concentrate pumps draws the concentrate from a fixed tank on the apparatus. This pump is designed to supply foam concentrate to a desired outlet at the same pressure at which the fire pump is supplyng water to that discharge.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diesel Motors
  • Fueling Systems (Motor Vehicles)
DEF

An injector which is camshaft-driven and incorporates a plunger. The plunger works in conjunction with orifices in the injection body to determine the beginning and end of injection. The plunger has a helix and is rotated by a rack so the beginning and end of injection can occur closer together or farther apart, thus shortening or lengthening the injection period and changing metering. A special pump which supplies fuel through an orifice to the injector operates at a pressure which is precisely controlled depending on the changes in engine speed.

DEF

Formation of arched cavities in a powder compact.

CONT

Some pesticide application equipment has hoppers to contain pesticides formulated as granules or dust.... This equipment is often designed with mechanical agitators or paddles that stir the pesticide above the adjustable opening, thus allowing the granules or dust to move continuously through the metering orifice without bridging above it.

Subject field(s)
  • Landing Gear (Aeroindustry)
DEF

A telescoping landing-gear strut consisting essentially of a hollow piston that travels in an oil-filled cylinder, the oil, upon compression of the strut, being forced through a small orifice in the bottom of the piston to provide a shock-absorbing effect.

CONT

... the air-oleo strut in the landing gear... consists of an outer cylinder, an inner cylinder(lower strut), a metering piston with an orifice, and a metering pin. The operation is such that when the airplane lands, the oil in the lower portion of the strut if forced upward through the orifice in the metering piston.

OBS

oleo strut; oleo leg; oleo: Terms standardized by BSI.

Domaine(s)
  • Atterrisseur (Constructions aéronautiques)
CONT
