Splashdown occurs at a velocity of about 80 feet per second(24 meters per second). It's not exactly a smooth impact, but that's slow enough for the capsule to thwack into the ocean and absorb shock from the impact without damaging its structure, its payload or any astronauts inside. 3, record 1, English, - splashdown

The meter per second is the derived unit of speed in the International System of Units(SI). The meter per second(m/s) is equal to 3. 6 kilometers per hour(km/h), or about 2. 236936 miles per hour(mph), or 3. 28084 feet per second(ft/s), or 39. 370079 inches per second(in/s) or 1. 943844 knots(kn). The speed is the distance traveled by an object during a period of time. Thus, meters per second(meters/second) show how many meters are traveled in one second. The meter is a unit of length in the metric system[, ] while the second is a unit of time. 5, record 2, English, - metre%20per%20second

A speed-up effect created by wind pressure in a natural corridor which allows a wind turbine to harness wind kinetic energy stronger than in the surrounding area. 3, record 7, English, - tunnel%20effect
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Speed up effects : Tunnel effect. If you push an ordinary bicycle air pump,... you will notice that the air leaving the nozzle moves much faster than the speed with which you are pushing. The reason, of course, is that the nozzle is much narrower than the cylinder in the pump. If you take a walk between tall buildings, or in a narrow mountain pass, you will notice that the same effect is working : the air becomes compressed on the windy side of the buildings or mountains, and its speed increases considerably between the obstacles to the wind. This is known as a "tunnel effect. "So, even if the general wind speed in open terrain may be, say, 6 metres per second, it can easily reach 9 meters per second in a natural "tunnel". Placing a wind turbine in such a tunnel is one clever way of obtaining higher wind speeds than in the surrounding areas. 4, record 7, English, - tunnel%20effect

... "failure" [is] when the snow begins to progressively loose strength. [Snow can fail without fracturing. Fracture is when a snow layer] snaps right off... Failure is thought, by some, to precede fracture--perhaps over the course of minutes to hours. But others believe that fracture doesn’t always require a preceding failure. There's a lot of evidence that they can both occur at the same time. When we add a rapid change to the snowpack, just like silly putty, it introduces stored elastic energy into the system making it capable of propagating a fracture.... Failure occurs slowly at perhaps centimeters per hour and fracture occurs catastrophically and has been measured at around 20 meters per second. 2, record 9, English, - fracture

A radiosonde carried by a balloon rising at a few meters per second does not measure such inversions accurately because the response time of the thermistor is several seconds. To quantify this error, we flew a radiosonde on a tethered kite on several occasions in winter at South Pole Station immediately prior to the routine launch of the same sonde on a weather balloon. In all cases, the equilibrated temperatures measured by the tethered sonde at a given pressure level were higher than those from the balloon-borne sonde throughout most of the inversion layer. Assuming that the tethered sonde data represent the true atmospheric temperature profile, a procedure can be developed to correct the temperature data from routine radiosonde soundings for the finite response time of the thermistor. 1, record 11, English, - tethered%20sonde

The Space Shuttle stops within 50 meters of Mir, which is approximately one-half the length of a football field. From that position the Space Shuttle waits for clearance from Mission Control to continue. When the command is given to continue, the Reaction Control System is activated again and the Space Shuttle closes in on Mir at a speed of about 0. 05 meters per second until it reaches a distance of about 9 meters. There, the Space Shuttle stops again and waits for approximately 5 minutes. The Commander and Pilot make sure they can see the docking target clearly and fine-tune the alignment of the Space Shuttle with the docking target. A large black cross called the Stand-off Cross is mounted 30 centimeters(cm) above the back plate in the center of the target. When the Commander has the Stand-off Cross squarely in line with the docking target, he or she maneuvers the Space Shuttle and makes contact with the docking ring. A theory which attempts to explain the behavior of physical systems on the assumption that they are composed of large numbers of atoms or molecules in vigorous motion; it is further assumed that energy and momentum are conserved in collisions of these particles, and that statistical methods can be applied to deduce the particles’ average behavior. 3, record 15, English, - kinetic%20theory

According to the kinetic theory, the absolute temperature is proportional to the kinetic energy of motion of molecules in a gas.... By assuming that the major part of the heat energy of a gas consists of kinetic energy of motion of the molecules, one finds that the average velocity of a molecule is several hundred meters per second under ordinary conditions. 4, record 15, English, - kinetic%20theory
