METHICILLIN-RESISTANT STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS [4 records]

Record 1 2018-05-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Medication
CONT

... the discovery of the malacidins, a distinctive class of antibiotics that are commonly encoded in soil microbiomes but have never been reported in culture-based NP [natural product] discovery efforts. The malacidins are active against multidrug-resistant pathogens, sterilize methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus skin infections in an animal wound model and did not select for resistance under our laboratory conditions.

Domaine(s)

CONT

DEF

A bacterium, frequently living on the skin or in the nose of a healthy person, that can cause illnesses ranging from minor skin infections (such as pimples, boils, and cellulitis) and abscesses, to life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis and septicemia.

OBS

Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive coccus, which appears as grape-like clusters when viewed through a microscope and as large, round, golden-yellow colonies, often with ß-hemolysis, when grown on blood agar plates. The golden appearance is the etymological root of the bacteria's name :aureus means "gold" in Latin.... Today, S. aureus has become resistant to many commonly used antibiotics.... Methicillin was the first antibiotic in its class to be used(it was introduced in 1959), but only two years later, the first case of methicillin-resistant S. aureus(MRSA) was reported in England.

Record 4 2006-08-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
DEF

A strain of the bacterium staphylococcus aureus that has become resistant to methicillin.

OBS

Staph aureus became resistant to penicillin in the 1940's. Methicillin, an antibiotic related to penicillin was effective against Staph aureus and became the antibiotic of choice in treating infections. Now, 30-40% of all Staph aureus is also resistant to methicillin, thus the name Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Microbiologie et parasitologie
DEF

Souche de la bactérie staphylococcus qui résiste à l'antibiotique censé le combattre, la méthicilline.

CONT

La prévalence du staphylocoque doré résistant à la méthicilline a grimpé à 40 pour cent dans de nombreux hôpitaux.
