Title l of the 1949 Housing Act authorized federal grants and loans to localities for slum clearance and urban redevelopment, under the condition that there be "a feasible method for the temporary relocation of families displaced from the project area and the permanent provision of decent dwellings at prices and rents within the financial means of such families. "Ostensibly, slum clearance was done to promote the building of low and moderate income housing. However, private developers were largely uninterested in inner-city residential redevelopment when vacant land was readily available at the periphery. The first lesson of urban renewal was clearly taught, if not learned : land clearance does not create demand. Instead, public housing was developed in large scale residential "projects" in urban renewal district. 3, record 12, English, - urban%20redevelopment

A saltbox is a building with a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back, generally a wooden frame house. A saltbox has just one story in the back and two stories in the front. The flat front and central chimney are recognizable features, but the asymmetry of the unequal sides and the long, low rear roof line are the most distinctive features of a saltbox, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept. 3, record 16, English, - saltbox%20house

More a building shape than a building style, the saltbox takes its name from a sloping gable roof that gives the house the shape of a wooden box used to store salt in Colonial times, like the reproduction of a 1770s saltbox by Replitiques. The saltbox house is formed by a one-story addition across the rear of a 1-1/2 or 2-story building. Initially an easy method of enlarging a house, it eventually became an accepted building form, particularly in New England after 1680. The style was common in New England before 1830, and it remained popular in other parts of the country until the late 1800s. A variation of early Colonial or Cape Cod style houses, the practical and simple saltbox was often a single room deep. Given that often a dozen or more people crowded into these early homes, colonists soon began looking for practical ways to expand living space. 1, record 16, English, - saltbox%20house

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Estimating the remaining service life span, or time-to-fogging, of insulating glass units(IGU's) can pose a planning and budgeting problem for building managers and condominium corporations. This research report describes a method for predicting the time-to-failure of IGU's, and suggests ways of improving the predictability of IGU failure. The method entails measuring dew-point temperatures for a sample of identical units; after three sets of measurements are gathered, a time-to-fogging prediction is obtained using a mathematical forecasting model. 2, record 19, English, - Predicting%20Time%20to%20Fogging%20of%20Insulated%20Glass%20Units

En procédant par quart de section, on déterminait, pour chaque horizon renfermant du bitume, le volume des ressources qui dépassaient certaines limites convenues, et ce pour l'ensemble du dépôt. Waterproofing is a generic term that may be defined as the method of sealing off against free water and moisture, usually under hydrostatic pressure, all parts of a building. Determination of the airtightness of building envelopes by the fan depressurization method.... This is a method for the determination of the airtightness of building envelopes. It is not a method for determining the actual air leakage which occurs through a building envelope under the influence of wind and buoyancy pressures or the operation of heating and ventilation systems.... Principle. A fan or fans are used to exhaust air from the building at rates required to maintain specified pressure differences across the building envelope. The air flows and the pressure differences are measured. The intention is to subject the complete envelope to a simultaneous and similarly directed air pressure. The flows are corrected to reference temperature and reference pressure. The relationship between flow and pressure difference is used to calculate the equivalent leakage area of the building envelope.
